Gathering and Illusion Softworks (Of Mafia fame) have released Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe online for free, as part of their promotional campaign for Hidden & Dangerous 2.
The download includes the original H&D, the expansion pack, all the patches and the mission editor.
I remember buying the original game way back in 1999. I bought into the hype that all the magazines and gaming sites had generated for this game, and was sorely disappointed when I realized what a piece of **** state the game had been released in. Great concept, great gameplay, horrible bugs. Your soldiers often fell through the ground or walked through walls, and the enemy usually spotted and fired at you from miles away, and somehow they managed to be deadly accurate with machine guns.
It seemed that magazines and gaming sites somehow received an earlier review build than the one that actually went gold. The results were that although the reviews mentioned a lack of a save feature, the retail version did indeed include such a feature, along with some other slight differences. And the bugs, of course. The patches that were later released for the game were supposed to fix the most severe of bugs, but they never did anything for me. Ultimately I gave up on the game, despite wanting to play it. ;(
Well, now you can get it for free. "Only" 265 MB!
Grab it from Gathering (http://www.gathering.com/hd2/hddeluxe.html) or Worthplaying (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=13582). Alternatively, if you have BitTorrent you can grab a torrent link here (http://www.aixgaming.com/filerush/download.php?target=hddeluxe.exe).
And finally, a link to the Hidden & Dangerous 2 web site (http://www.hidden-and-dangerous.com) for the curious amongst you.
