The original King's Quest was a landmark game that was the start of graphical adventures as we know them today. It was first published in 1984 and was developed by Roberta Williams of Sierra to showcase the capabilities of a new IBM computer. For the first time gamers were not limited to just visualizing the scene that the text adventures that ruled gaming gave them, but could actually control an animated character on an actual picture.
It may look ancient by today's standards, but at the time it was a sensation and the beginning of the most successful adventure game series in history, which today numbers millions of fans worldwide. But although the innovative technology was indeed a breakthrough, undoubtedly the reason for the game's long term success is that it was solidly based on a proven formula that has worked for centuries: a good fairytale.
And now the people at Tierra have remade this wonderfull game in VGA graphics. Does this remake live up to the original?

Here's my review of King's Quest: Quest for the Crown VGA Remake

Story: I don't think King's Quest I's story was much different from a lot of other games. Many games that era had a fairytale story (Zork, Zork II, Zork III, etc.). However, this is not a Zork clone by any means. KQI has all the great elements and characters of other fairy tales.
You play as Sir Graham, the finest knight in all of Davantery. The king is very old and ready to pass on the crown. He has asked you to take the throne if you can retrieve three tresures that Davantery has lost over the years. You, of course, accept to undertake this quest.
Along the way, you will meet some very unforgetable fairytale characters, all of which are very traditinal, and yet still somehow redeem the qualitys of truly original characters.
Story get's an 8/10

Graphics: The original KQ was truly a wonder to behold, and the remake is no exception. Tierra did an amazingly great job with the VGA graphics and wonderfull backrounds. Whether your exploring the land around the castle, the clouds, or the caves, you can bet for some beutiful stuff. The artwork on the characters when you talk to them is also worth mentioning.
Graphics get a 9/10

Sound/Music: The only thing I can say about KQ's music is that it's gorgeous. Once you hear the traditinal fairytale music in the menu screen, the mood just flicks on. The sound affects and voice acting could have been better, but not so much to bring the sound's quality way down.
Sound gets an 8/10

Gameplay: Well, the controls are as simple as they get; piont and click. And I'm sure every adventure fan will enjoy playing this game as long as they can tolerate a few dwarfs and other dirty thieves stealing their golden eggs. All the puzzles are based off a different fairytail. Climbing the giant beanstock, avoiding the witch in the gingerbread house, and tricking the troll into letting you cross his bridge are just some of the great puzzles you'll solve on your adventure. There is one puzzle that's just tedious: getting out of the caves. However this is just one of the very few flaws in the game.
Gameplay gets a 9/10

So, all in all we got a timeless adventure game that none of us will forget about. And Tierra has made certain that we never will forget. I give King's Quest: Quest for the Crown VGA Remake a

9.4/10
