Well, I finally bought TLJ only to find out it doesn't run on my machine. Instead, it gives me the following vague message and kicks me back to my desktop:

D:\ra\engine03\DX_Module\primarysurface.cpp 868.
Check failed: Unrecognised error value.

Anyone else with this problem? Any solutions? Tips? Hints?

HELP!

Oh, I'm running Windows 2000 SP3, 512 Mb RAM, and a GeForce 4 MX 440.

No idea to be honest. Only think I can think of is that maybe your CD drive is not the lowest letter avaliable (eg it's drive F when the letter D is free) Thats just random speculation; sorry.

Hmm..the letters DX suggest to me that there might be some problem with the Direct X. Are you sure that everything is okay with your direct X whatever it is, and that it's updated? If not, make sure ;) Reinstall/Update it if you have to.

It's been a while since I played TLJ, but I had problems too.
I couldn't run it with hardware acceleration without crashing (geforce2 mx).
So maybe you should try software mode.
For directx, you can type 'dxdiag' (in the box you get when you click start-> run) to get an analysis.

It looks like something screwed up my Video drivers.

When I look at the Display tab of the DirectX Diagnostic tool you mentioned I get the following information in the 'notes' field at the bottom of the window:

-No problems found.
-To test DirectDraw functionality, click the "Test DirectDraw" button above.
-Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.

It seems as if something is wrong with Direct3D. I've tried running other 3D games (Elite Force 2) and found no problems there.

The quest continues...

I would reinstall DX9 and your video drivers.

DX 9.0b:

Well, just did that and alas; no banana ;(

I don't know what's wrong with my DirectX, but I've tested more games now and they still work. Very strange indeed.

YESSS!

I have found the solution: A few weeks ago I installed a Novell Management Agent on my PC which, amongst other things, lets me operate other PC's on my home network (Novell Netware). Now, this program also installs some kind of video-driver thingie for some reason (I think it has something to do with being able to display multiple desktops) which seemed to cause the problem.

I uninstalled Novell Managment Agent and TLJ worked! The strange error in DirectX is gone too.
