Hello everyone,

Alright a while ago I bought The Adventures of Willy Beamish on eBay for PC CD Rom. The game doesn't have any scratches and is in great condition. Anyway for some reason I can not run the game on XP. I use VDMSound, Dosbox, everything. I've tried everything. I've also tried running it on 98 and 95. That doesn't work either. I keep getting this message no matter what I do on what OS:

"Unable to initialize hds! mode=4, port=544"

Help!

Thanks,
Brandon Lee

Ah, well some games just won't run on modern machines. I remember my (abandonwared version) of Willy Beamish which did work on XP at work, but not at home. The error message you pasted here doesn't ring a bell, though.

Games such as Flight of the Amazon Queen only work on my old Pentium 200 Mhz machine which I still have for playing these classics.

i just got Willy Beamish last week. i haven't tried it yet.

you might try posting at the sierra "classic games" board: http://community.vugames.com/WebX?13@200.o7vWc8mDoAa.0@.ef93db8

also, this seems to be a sound card problem, not an XP problem.

Oh forget it, even if you did get it to run on XP, you would have a speed problem with the game. It's somewhat time oriented and a couple of key points in the game can't be passed if your computer is anything more than a Pentium 100.

Any problems like that can be solved with Turbo or Moslo or any more recent equivalent. (software that slows your cpu speed down) :)

Not always. It doesn't slow your CPU down -- it just hogs it, and unless someone made a hack to control Windows' scheduler, the software fix is going to remain imperfect. (Actually, even still, it may be some weird micro-bug in the assembly, but the likelihood is low. Blah blah blah numbers words letters.)

Wow, i didn't even know, until now that is, that this game exisists in CD format! What does it have, that floppy one doesn't? More music, speech, animation? Anything? Nothing? :)

Spoken dialogue, me thinks. Or to speak in LucasArts terms: talkie!

Putting Moslo at 5% on my P166 just barely got me past the frog legs kitchen part. I pity the player that gets that far on a more recent computer.

DosBox is 286/386 emulator, and according to compatibility list, Willy Beamish(both floppy and CD) is supported. And since this one emulates slow machines, maybe it solves those speed issues in Willy B. Will probably try it during the weekend.

Hey Guys,
i just signed up because i noticed that there were lots of people having trouble with this game. I used to have the cd's for it but they were given away. I'm pretty sure that the game was only ever made for macintosh computers though. That might explain why it won't work on your normal PC's.
anyway I'm downloading it now from a site so if it works on my computer i'll tell you where to get it from.

cheers

Welcome to the forum, EKS. *D

The version of Willy Beamish that I have is definitely for the PC (although to date I still haven't tried it).

Even though the publisher has not supported this game for a long time, donwloading it is still sketchy legally and Adventure Gamers doesn't support warez or abandonware. Please don't post any download links here - I'll just have to delete them.

However if you DO find a solution to the problem mentioned at the beginning of this thread, we'd love to hear it!

I'm sorry - as I said, we don't support download of commercial games here (even old ones). The page you linked to had a link for downloading the game so I had to remove it.

ps Please take a look at the FAQ (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/faq.php?) if you have any questions about what is and is not okay to post here.

I got this game off Ebay to.......Here is how I got it to work on my XP ....Oh and Have fun.
I know this post is like 3 years old but I must have read it in every google serach trying to find a soulution to getting it to work for my Willy Beamish...so I tucked it away and it collected dust for about 2 years untill I found these instuctions for Night Trap PC and tried it on willy beamish and Hey it worked......So I am writing this post so others having the same problem dont have to go thew what I did to get the answer..

1. Install DOSBox
Launch DOSBox0.70-win32-installer.exe (Or the Newest Version)
and follow the onscreen instructions.

2. Launch DOSBox
Find your DOSBox directory, or start the
program via the Start menu.

3. Set-up DOSBox
After launching DOSBox, there are only
two commands you will ever have to rem-
ember to launch Your game.

FIRST, TYPE:

mount c C: \

(Replace the 'c' and 'C: /' with your hard
drive letter. 99% of users will have "C"
as default.)

THEN, TYPE:

mount d d: \ -t cdrom

(Replace the 'd' and 'D: \' with your CDROM
drive letter the game disc is in or
mounted to. This is probably "D" or "E" for
real drives, and "F" for virtual drives.

4. That's it!
DOSBox isn't perfect -- there might be some
small pops in audio sound, but it's not bad
at all, and they go away after a while.
Everything else is perfect.

NEVER mount the root of your real C: drive. A very dangerous thing to do.
