I have recently found a copy of the voice version of Gabriel Knight 1. I have already completed it on the non-voice version, but I would very much enjoy playing it with voices, particually since, contrary to general opnion, I kinda like Tim Curry's voice.
However I have been having several problems, partly because I have ME, I can't follow many of the compatibility answers that many XP people have been using. I installed the program but it talks of disply driver incompatbilty. I can run it from my CD file, using sierra.exe, but it is incredibly quick and does not use to voices for some reason. How do I change my display driver, and is it worth it or should I desperately try to find an XP computer and use taht instead.

I'm not sure if this will help or not because I played it on 98 rather than ME. I had to set the screen resolution to 640x480 and 256 colors before starting the game. Prior to that it would lock up as soon as I started it. This might help with the display problem but I'm not sure about the sound problems.

It runs very quickly and without voices because the Sierra.ini file, which tells the game where the voices are, is probably pointing to the wrong place.
Did you install the game on your hard drive? What is the drive letter of your CD-ROM? Go into the Sierra.ini file (in your game directory on your hard drive) and, if needed, change any instances of D:\ to the correct drive letter.
The game isn't designed to be played off the CD -- so if that's the only way you can get it to work (because of the display driver issue), I'm not sure you're going to be able to. Definitely try changing your screen resolution to 640x480 and 256 colors before you launch the game.

Thanks for everyone's help, particually in concern with the setting it to 640 by 480 and 256 colours. It got me past the display driver difficulty, but now I've found a different barrier. I click on the application, only to get the message 'Windows Title not found', I don't suppose anyone has the slightest idea of what this means because I don't.
Walk us through what you did to install the game. Did you install the Windows version (using setup.exe) or the DOS version (using install.exe)? What are you double-clicking to launch the application? Have you tried launching it in other ways?
It sounds like you're trying to launch using a shortcut that's pointing to the wrong place. If you right-click the shortcut and select Properties, you should be able to see what the target is. Make sure the target matches the path of where the game is installed.
Also make sure you launch the game from your hard drive, not from the CD.

Ok, I installed the windows version using setup.exe and am double clicking on the file SIERRAW.exe in C:\SIERRA\GK1WIN. So, I don't think its a shortcut problem since I'm double clicking on the very file I need to access.
I think I may have guessed the problems in Windows, that being when I run the test everything is good except when it checks my vbersion of Windows and crashes. My guess is Windows Title not found means it doesn't understand ME, so its my Win version that is the problem. My question is, Is there anyway around this? Can I get it to identify it as Win95 or identify it in its own right, or even is there a way to get around this or am I stuck?
That's so weird. I've heard of games not recognizing XP because they think it's NT, but have never heard of a game not recognizing an iteration of 9x as such. How frustrating.
One option is to install the DOS version instead. It should be on the same CD as the Windows version... install it using install.exe.
Have you taken a look at the Sierra.ini file? It might be worth looking at, just to see if there's anything that seems off. I have the game installed on win98 right now... I will take a look and see if there's anything you could potentially change.

I just tried running the game by double-clicking sierraw.exe and, lo and behold, got the same error message you're getting. Which is odd, because for most of their games that does the trick. I'm on Win98 so it can't be an ME specific problem.
Use the shortcut in your Start menu instead. Does that work?
My other suggestion, if you can't get it running with the shortcut, is to try using a boot disk. My CD has instructions for how to do this in a file called Bdwin95.txt
Another weird thing is that this game has no .ini files, and I can't figure out where it's getting its instructions for which drive contains the CD, etc. It doesn't have the same files as most of the Sierra games from around this time. But that could be an indication that this was one of the last SCI1 (I think) games... maybe the technology matured to the point where they could keep people like me from poking around and messing with the innards of the game...

Thanks for all this help, its very much appreciated.
I have tried using the shortcut, but I just get an error message and have to return to windows. In my directory, I do seem to have an ini file. Did you do a maximum installation? I'll try the boot disk trick when I can.
Consdiering it was configued for 95, and you have 98 and I ME, do you think the windows title difficulty may be because it doesn't understand any versions beyond 95?
On the dos installation, all I seem to get is saving different options for the programme, it doesn't seem to perform an actual installation, so I don't seem to get anywhere.
Once again, thank you, the help is appreciated.
How odd. What error message do you get when you try the shortcut? Did you double-check and make sure the target for the shortcut is correct? What happens if you create your own shortcut of the sierraw.exe file?
I did the maximum installation. I have installed this in two places (started out on my laptop, then installed on my win98 computer and moved my saves over so I could keep playing). When I installed on my laptop, I also wound up with a GK icon on the desktop. I can't remember if I selected that during installation or if I created it myself. I don't have that icon now so if it was an option during installation I must have bypassed it the second time I installed).
What's the name of the .ini file you found? If you open it in notepad, is there anything interesting in there? (I wonder if you have one and I don't because we have different versions of the game? Mine is the one that came with the GK Mysteries pack.)
My suggestion at this point is to completely uninstall the game, get rid of the GK1win folder and anything that's in it, and install again... either that or try the boot disk.

ps to answer your question, it could be that the Windows Title not Found refers to these being later versions of win9x, but of all the problems I've heard about with running this game on XP, this particular error is not one of them. If that were the issue, I would expect it to happen on XP as well. But it could be that it does happen on XP and I'm just not aware of it...

I am running Gabriel Knight Sins of the Father (CD VERSION) on Windows 98 and get the error message "Windows Title Not Found" but can still play the game. The problem I have is when ever I click Intro I don’t get the nightmare scene and the same happens when I complete a day. On the diskette version it always showed it. Does anyone know how to fix this? ;(
