If graphics are a priority, start with Dreamfall. You'll love it. Then you'll go back to play The Longest Journey and then go back again and replay/finish Dreamfall :D

yes i was looking at that. the graphics for longest journey are rather old.

hi. this is the only thing, http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=44836&tab=controls see im a TOTAL mouser. i cant type my way out of a paper bag. so i think this would become quite hard to use.

i should state that i want a traditional point and click game. you know one like the ags style of control. where everything is done by using the mouse. plus the battle mode is a no go for me. i should also state that i prefer inventory puzzles. no puzzles like math, numbers, chess, video games, ect. ect. also im a begginer, so i need puzzles that make sense and are very logical. nothing like, put these coordinates in order...

so bearing all that in mind, what do you recommend?

I would say "The Longest Journey", also, because the story is great, and I didn't think the graphics were half-bad either. Dreamfall is the more graphically gorgeous one of the two, and the story was also very itneresting. The combat in it doesn't show up too often, but it is a turn-off, and there's no typing, just using the arrow keys to move. These are inconvieniences, but if you play "The Longest Journey" and like it, you'll be dying to play Dreamfall, and willing to overlook these problems.

I didn't much like Syberia, but both sets of adventure games are well-loved. I'd go with "Longest Journey", since the story really gripped me more than Syberia. I take it you liked the "Longest Journey" demo? :P

Although they are cartoons, I'd recommend the Broken Sword games (specifically 1-3) as they have serious stories/themes and good ones at that. Broken Sword 1 and 2 were done in 1996 and 1997 respectively, but the graphics still look great and detailed even by todays standards imo.

You can buy 2 and 3 from GOG.com (http://www.gog.com/en/search/) or even buy a double/triple pack from an online retailer for a small amount.

Longest Journey = best in genre.

indigo prophecy/fahrenheit is another good one i think if you're looking for something more serious/sci-fi.

Yes...def Longest Journey/Dreamfall...after that i'd second the suggestion of Indigo Prophecy/Farenheit and then i'd recommend the Syberia series.

Another game with a great (and serious) story is Culpa Innata. Pretty good graphics...and the sequel is due out soon too.

Both Syberia and the Longest Journey series are good, but of the two, if I'm reading your tastes right, I'd go for Longest Journey. TLJ also has the advantage of being a fair length of a game, not to say its monotonous, but it will keep you entertained for a while.

Alternative for the future for you include Overclocked which is rather divisive, Rhodan, taken from a popular (in Germany anyway) sci-fi series of books, The Lost Crown (all in monochrome but bags of atmosphere). Theres also the Frogwares series of Sherlock Holmes games, The Secret of the Silver Earring, Mystery of the Mummy, The Awakened (available in a remastered edition), Nemesis (known in some countries as Sherlock Holmes vs Arsene Lupin), and the forthcoming vs Jack the Ripper, the demo of which is available.

Culpa Innata has been mentioned and is a nice game. The CSI games are a bit dated but are okay for a quick play, though I've heard the CSI:New York one should be avoided.

There's also the Agatha Christie games, And Then there were None, Murder on the Orient Express and Evil Under the sun, they are available in a triple pack now. And Then There were none has rather dated character models now but the games are fairly enjoyable and available at a cheap price.

Oh, I forgot, you're talking about Steam. I think a good number of those are available on Steam

Whatever you decide, I hope you get something. I think you might enjoy The Longest Journey though.

People keep mentioning games that use keyboard controls and or have combat in it. Cybernetic stated that this is a no go for him:

This means that the likes of Dreamfall and Indigo Prophecy/Farenheit are out.

I'd certainly go with "Overclocked" as well. I'm getting that one myself once I get the necessary funds ;)

If you don't mind a bit of "retro" gaming, the Gabriel Knight series is pretty serious stuff, but I don't think they're on Steam.

LucasArts' "The Dig" is, though, and while the graphics might be considered a bit cartoony, there's still a high level of realism and when you're talking seriousness, it's like the exact opposite of "Day of the Tentacle".
They even novelized it into a very good sci-fi.

Secret Files : Tunguska
One of the best games in recent years in my opinion.

Still Life
One of the best crime thrillers I've ever played

Don't know if you can get them from steam though

If you can get it..Still Life, but I don't think thats on Steam.

Does it absolutely have to be Steam? The two Secret Files games, Tunguska and Purita Cordis are available fairly cheaply on hardcopy and would be worth your while.

*EDIT* Looks like I was beaten with the above post. :)
