They're selling Penumbra Black Plague and Penumbra overture with 75% off this weekend only. Are they worth playing?...not sure I want anything too dark.

They are well worth playing/buying. Its an experience you can never get in any other game.

I played another game from Steam called Cryostasis. I really loved that game cause it had really good atmosphere, graphics and an awesome story. Someone recommended I get Penumbra cause it was 'similar'.

I was extremely disappointed...I found the game boring, the graphics outdated and the story cliched and just plain crap. (It was mostly let down by the ending). If you have a good powerful PC get Cryostasis, I really cannot recommend Penumbra.

I downloaded the deal. Can't go wrong for $5.

Me to, €5 for us on the European main land. The good thing about Steam is that you can make a backup of your game. You can even compile a backup CD/DVD to burn if you like.
After the purchase I was amazed to see 3 penumbra titles in my game list: Overture, Black Plague and Requiem. Where does this Requiem come from? Is this the first (free) release of the series?

I think Requiem is the original Penumbra game, with Black Plague being the (more successful) sequel and Overture being the more puzzle-orientated spin-off. I think that's how it goes.

Requiem is the expansion to Black Plague afaik, since it's the gold edition it comes with the package.

Question - how dark is this game...I'm trying to steer clear of stuff which involves too much killing and upleasantness.

The correct order is:
Overture -> Black Plague -> Requiem

Overture is the original one, where all begins, Black Plague is the sequel where most of the questions are answered, and finally Requiem is like a spin off, a puzzle game with no story.

There's almost no killing, you can finish the series without killing almost anything. It rellies almost exclusively on psychological horror, pure fear of the unknown, and IMO its successfull in that area. Its the most scary game i have played alongside silent hill, sometmes the tension is almost unberable.

Penumbra more cliched than Cryostatis? Hah! Get Penumbra for the originality. Cryostatis tries to hard to make a horror atmosphere. Its more of a brawl than an adventure game. Not to mention Cryo offers nothing new to gameplay.
