First, I'm running the game on XP and managed to install it fine. However, when I try to run the game, I get an error saying that it can't find the pal.999 resource, and that I should make sure the CD is in there. However, the CD is in there, and my drivers appear to be working ok. Can anyone help me out?

if you haven't already tried dosbox, you can try that program or a program called abandon loader to make the program work.

I've run it on Windows XP Home Edition and it worked fine.
Try downloading the patch and then using DOSBOX or some other DOS emulation program and see what happens. The game is much more stable under DOS than Windows.
which install did you use? Try doing the full install and see if that fixes the problem.
Also browse the CD - do you see a file called pal.999 on there?

ps I think you're trying to run the DOS version -- have you also tried the windows version? They should both be on the same CD. Windows version can be installed by running setup.exe.

Well, right now I'm using the windows version and I did the full install. However, I am going to try the dos version and see if that works. I've checked and that 999.pal resource does not exist on the cd, so that's wierd.
Also, I should note that Beast Within works on my home PC, put this problem only comes up constantly on my laptop. Well, I hope I can fix this sometime, and thanks for all the help so far. Anyway, here is the full error message:

We're sorry, you have encountered an internal game error. Please restart your game and restore a saved game. If you have continued problems, please report the following information to Sierra Technical Support:
Can not find 999.pal resource.
If this is a CD-ROM game please
make sure that a CD-ROM is loaded.
If you continue to experience this dialog make
sure your CD-ROM drivers are loaded properly.

The DOS version should work, but you may need to use VDMSound for the audio to play correctly.
For the windows version, did you try putting it in compatibility mode before you ran it?
Another thing you should do, look for an .ini file in your game directory (probably Sierra.ini). It should show where the game is "pointing" to find the CD. Make sure it has the correct drive letter (D: or E: or whatever).
The only other thing I can think of is that the game has issues with the particular CD-ROM / drivers on your laptop. Have you applied the patch? It's here (ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/pc/patches/) (scroll down to gk2pat.exe) but I'm not sure if it's for the windows or DOS version.

Hi again,
I just had this problem with GK2 (from the Limited Edition pack) on XP. It happened because I tried to launch with disk 2 in the drive. I put in disk 1 instead, and it launched fine.
A message saying "Please insert Disk 1" might have been a nicer way for them to handle it...
Try launching from Disk 1 and let us know if it works.
