View Full Version : Torin's Passage - pal.999 error and other problems

It seems my computer is doing all it can to prevent me from running Torin’s Passage. Initially, after installing the Windows version of the game, I couldn’t start the game via it’s folder, because I got an error message saying the pal.999 resource was missing. Yet, the autorun feature on the game’s disc worked just fine. The intro video wouldn’t run, but aside from that, everything was fine. I played the game for awhile with no problems before running into a nasty glitch* that prevented me from continuing. I downloaded the patch, and that didn’t help anything. I decided to try and install the DOS version and use Dosbox (which I have absolutely no experience in). Trying to mount the game’s c: drive and run it that way prompted the pal.999 resource error message once again. Mounting the disc drive and running it from the CD caused another error: resource.cfg couldn’t be found. Even the new Dosbox installer by Collector didn’t work, either; I got the same pal.999 error message in dosbox, and clicking on SIERRAH.exe in the program folder caused nothing to happen. I’m at my wits end trying to play this game, and I’m not computer savvy enough for advanced trouble shooting. Can anybody figure out what could possibly be wrong here?

I'm running the Windows XP Home Edition, if that helps.

*The aforementioned glitch occured in Escarpa, the second game world. After entering the Dragon's Mouth cave, anytime I entered another cave/area of Escarpa, the image of the Dragon's Mouth cave would be displayed, instead of the proper image. All the prompts and arrows of the appropriate screen were present, but it was impossible to tell what was happening because of the improper image. For example, if I entered the skunk cave, there would be the dragon's mouth cave image, but Torin would still mention the skunks.

Try my Torin’s Passage DOSBox Installer (http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/DOSBoxInstallers.html).

Try my Torin’s Passage DOSBox Installer (http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/DOSBoxInstallers.html).

Tried that already, and nothing happens when I click the sierrah.exe. I even tried mounting it in Dosbox itself, but once again, pal.999

Edit: I found out why nothing happens. When I clicked on the desktop shortcut, it opened Dosbox for a split second, and the pal.999 error message flashed and then DosBox instantly closed.

If you used my installer, you don't click on any file in the game's directory to start the game. There will be a DOSBox shortcut created by the installer that will start the game.

Used the shortcut, and pal.999 rears its ugly head once more.

You must have a damaged file. Examine your CD for any scratches, abrasions, etc.

There are a few stray scratches, but nothing that would be severely damaging.

And just for the sake of speculation, would the fact that I have two disc drives be a factor in this?

Try copying all of the files to the harddrive. If any fail to copy then there is a problem with the CD.

Tried it, and everything copied just fine.

Right click on the shortcut and copy what is in the "Target" box and post it here.

"C:\Program Files\DOSBox\dosbox.exe" "C:\Sierra\Torin\SIERRAH.EXE" -conf "C:\Sierra\Torin\dosbox.conf" -noconsole -exit

I'm glad you brought this up, 'cause even to someone without advanced computer knowledge, that looks darn fishy.

If the Torin's is in "C:\Sierra\Torin" it should work.

No good still. Whatever the Pal.999 error is, it refuses to relent.

Delete the game's folder and reinstall with my installer.

Well, 3rd time's the charm! Everything is working perfectly this time, and there wasn't any glitch in Escarpa, either. Thanks alot, Collector!
