While this news is certainly a surprise it’s a huge get for Telltale, probably bigger than Walking Dead etc.

This news didn’t just hit the specialist press, the BBC News ran this story

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

I’ve only played Minecraft enough to convince myself I can’t recreate my apartment building, but isn’t it a game without a proper protagonist by definition? I mean I understand the move from a marketing standpoint, but otherwise it’s a strange proposition.

Could be interesting. I hope this signifies the end to Telltale’s “look how dark and gritty we are!” phase which has been going since they finished up Sam & Max.

This may not be the game we’re waiting for, but this is HUGE for Telltale.

They have the capabilities to pull this off, and if they do, it’ll also bring in enough money for them to do whatever they want as their next project. Now isn’t that something to look forward to?

Weird news but this might be the closest thing Telltale will have to a new IP, not a lot of restriction for characters or locations or story except making everything blocky

I’d be more inclined to see potential in that if someone like a Dave Grossman was still at the company. I don’t think anyone (with any clout) at the company now has any even vague desire to make more traditional adventures again. They certainly haven’t indicated in any interviews I’ve read that they’d be open to returning to these games in the near future. In my opinion, getting enough money to do what they want would just mean them going after big, BIG franchises- even bigger than GoT- to do their current thing with; it would NOT involve them taking a risk on another season of Sam and Max or a Tales of Rubacava, as awesome as either of those would be (assuming they made them with one or two puzzles). But that’s just the way I see it.

Just curious, does anyone know, in regards to writers/designers, is there anyone left at Telltale from their Sam and Max/Monkey Island days?

Fine by me.  As long as their new thing doesn’t become selling out and constantly going for whatever will make them the most money, instead of caring more about making great games with great stories.

@ A.A: I wasn’t implying they’d make a traditional adventure game again, just that they could go for original IPs or obscure IPs instead of the big guns.
I agree that I don’t see them suddenly switching style.

Or they could just use the money to upgrade their engine…

This! 100%

Edit: I hope they also change the control output, my “Q” key in my keyboard is breaking any day now…

Some should keep in mind that many people look down on adventure games, so they should at least refrain from doing the same on other genres. Whatever commercial success minecraft may have now, it is nevertheless a pure product of independent gaming. Adventure games where once the big thing, that didn’t make them unworthy of any artistic value. Of course minecraft has no backstory or meaningful characters, but it is more than an empty canvas. It has a certain depth to it (no pun intended), in how it plays out if you actually play it right (unlike many who just create buildings and stuff with third party programs). The way you feel completely lost in the beginning, then progressively learn to master your environment, before exploring to discover the hidden secrets of the world and the netherworld. I played it this way with a friend, and it gave me some unique experiences in terms of gaming. It’s not what I prefer as a gamer, because it lacks what I value the most, emotion, but I still found it a very interesting game.
As for Telltale, I have no idea what they intend to do with it, but I am very curious to see it.

Press Q to pay respects Tongue

I think the rate at which they are adding more games in their pipeline will restrain them
from using new engine. Minecraft will do fine with their skills Tongue

And yes you are right, Minecraft is pretty much blank canvas to play with, time to put soul in the Lego world.

I really don’t know what to think of this. Minecraft? Really? Do they choose the their franchises with care or they just put up with whatever the money goes with?

But then again, this is Telltale. I’m sure even they could breathe some story into the empty Minecraft universe.
