I'm stuck at the first dream sequence, and since there aren't any walkthroughs on the net, figured I'd ask here. I'm in the first dream sequence at the contstruction site, and I can't figure out how to make the elevator move. I have the hammer, and the crowbar. I was thinking that I'd need to use the rag on the pulleys to clean the up and get it to move, but the guy only picks up the rag from the wrong side. Any help would be appreciated.

Would love to help you but I'm still trying to figure out how to get the dang Bell tower door open :P

Any hints would be appreciated.

EDIT:
Disregard. I figured it out.

To get the door open, there's a padlock you have to look at. It's kinda hard to see, but it's on the left hand side. After that you'll need a wire to pick the lock, and that can be gotten from the asian girl. Ask the black lady. And I'm not sure if you've done that yet or not, so after that to open the door, just use a stick on it to pry it open.

Remember the closed toolbox where you picked up the hammer? That crowbar should get it open.

Stroupe

Yeah I got that open but there wasn't anything in there. Just "Junk". So now I'm just missing the handle. And btw, how do you use the spoiler tag?

The Will

If you right click something, Adam will investigate further. Try investigating the junk. I know what you're thinking, this should've been explained ingame, and I agree. Took me an hour to figure that out.

Spoiler tags work like this:

Alright, stuck again. At the trailer, I picked up the brick, and the walkthrough says to throw it through the window, but it's not letting me do anything. The guys' already been electrocuted, so I figured I should be able to throw the brick through the trailer window.

I am stuck with the dead man. I've seen the saw, and when I climb down the ladder to plug the cables, it keeps telling me that it doesn't want to climb.
Am I missing something or am I not supposed to look at the cables? The walkthrough isn't very clear on this.
thanks in advance,

I don't know how to use the spoiler tag, so forgive any spoilers, however, the chain is on the ground towards the front of the "broken bark". Looks like a boat to me though. Anyways, it's hard to see and the mouse hotspot for it is pretty small. So just run your mouse real slow up and down in the area between the boulder and the front of the boat.

I'm quite enjoying this game so far after completing the first 3 days, but I'm amazed that nobody (so far) has complained about the...

...seat belt dexterity puzzle yet!

It seems you need good reflexes and/or a good mouse to get through that one? LOL

It needed a few tries here and I'm a well versed FPS player too, or perhaps I'm just getting old, hehe. ;)

If anyone needs a save to get past that part It's here. (Server doesn't like .rar files so... rename the .zip files to .rar then use Winrar to reconstruct the complete save. Server won't allow files greater than 97K! pooh...)

The Will
11-24-2007, 06:05 PM
Actually, that puzzle was what made me uninstall the game. I didn't quite enjoy it anyway, the first bit was just stupid walking back and forth (not to mention the conversations that barely made sense - bad translating probably) trying to find the pixel to click on the move somewhere else, followed by a rather uninspiring dream. Then when they threw that bloody seatbelt dexterity thingy at me I got really annoyed, and after failing miserably 10 times I had enough.

Thanks for the saves though, maybe I'll reinstall and see if it gets better. :)

What do people think of this game and is it worth buying?

I'm going to say no.

The interface is annoying as hell and the voice acting is absolutely terrible. I am also finding myself doing a lot of pixel hunting on the edges of the screen trying to find the hotspot to change locations or to figure out where my next batch of 5 rocks, 3 sticks is going to come from...and don't even get me started on that that damn "Climb" icon :GRR The puzzles seem to be either very easy or extremly bizarre. I mean come on, how the hell am I supposed to figure out that the only way to open a door would be to wire a corpse with an electric lamp ?

I am also not real crazy about the action sequences.

All in all, I would give this about a 4 out of 10.

You're welcome.

Just after this is another timed game sequence. Well, the whole scene is 'timed' actually, but in an interesting way. Much less frustrating than the seat-belt problem anyway. However, within this, there's another dexterity problem but again much less difficult.

I can honestly see this as a major stumbling block for quite a lot of players not used to these pseudo action sequences.

IMHO, a patch is needed to either slow down or be more forgiving of mistakes for these parts, or perhaps make an optional bypass key so that these sequences can be skipped altogether?

BTW, I realised that a few people may not have access to Winrar (which needs to be paid for out of the shareware period), so here's the same save but able to be reconstructed by a freeware utility called HJSplit available here:

http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/#win32

Remove the .zip suffix from the two files, use HJSplit to recombine them, then use Winzip (or the OS) to extract the .esa save file! What a drama...:frusty:

actually for the seat belt sequence... I did it this way and found it a lot easier... click and hold the mouse button (adding a new "color" is only triggered when you release the button) this makes it a lot easier to do (unclikc as soon as the previous spot is lit did it for me).
for the locations, you can use the "E" key on the keyboard and all location spots are highlighted...
Indeed, the stairs is a pain and the fact that you need to right click was the most annoying for me.
Hunting for the 5 (R...S) and the 3 (S...S) was also a pain but then again they are quite widly available so that wasn't so bad.
All in all, I would give it a 4/5 out of 10.

Hello,
first of all, a big thanks to Cris Pandry for posting the savegame that starts after the seatbelt game. Grmbl, just an impossible task for me, and really, I tried a lot. Although I might give it one last try using Balmhood's method.

Now, I'm stuck, and I'm not quite sure whether this would be a bug or not. I tried a first time to escape the island.
But I did not have the flippers yet, so I did not succeed. After that, I stumbled upon the hideout, again. I had never used it before, and I thought this time, why not hide a few things in it. I put my glass shard in there, along with some other things. Now, when I returned from a bit of walking and talking around, the shard was not in the hideout place anymore!
So now I'm left wondering: will it be possible to find another shard, or some other sharp thing - or am I just stuck without a means of cutting the tree???
I hope someone was in this situation and has found a solution to it. I already searched all places in hope of finding something. And my last savegame is at the beginning of the mortuary scene :frusty:
Greetings

btw - if you think the conversations are strange, try putting the subtitles on - it makes them even stranger... (a lot of mistakes in there)

Hey Blackcat,

That's some nice lateral thinking there! Wish I'd thought of that.

Don't know the answer to the question though. Justice suggests that there should be a way around this though for sure?!

Best I can offer is a save game for you at the spot before Adam leaves the island.

Give me a few minutes and I'll re-install and upload the relevant save for you.

@balmhood,

I tried your method, but found it not much better than the original way. What I did was click one section before (depending on the speed of the rotation of course). It was always the innermost rotation that was more luck than judgement though. :)

Yes, the 'E' shortcut is useful for the exits. Pity there wasn't one for the hotspots too. Pixel hunting caused me a few headaches in this game.

Cris Pandry

Ok download the two files. Remove the .zip suffix from both files. You now have a .001 file and a .002 file. Use HJSplit to 'Join' them. You now have the save game but .zipped.

Unzip that file using either WinZip, WinRar, 7Zip, or the Operating system if you're using WinXP / Vista. Now you have the .esa saved game file! Phew... :)

Place that file in the X: \Program Files\The Adventure Company\Next Life\bin\saves folder, where X: is the partition where you installed it (probably C: ). Mine was Q: as I have LOADS of partitions on my hard drive(s), but it doesn't matter.

If you already have a save by the same name, then simply rename the unzipped .esa save file to something higher than your current highest numbered saved game e.g. save059.esa or whatever.

Then restart the game and load the save game you just put in there from above. It should show the same number and/or time as the file.

Does that help?

Patti
11-29-2007, 06:26 AM
I know how to do all of that hun, its just that when I remove the .zip, it tells me that the files are corrupted.

Do I remove both the .zip names or just the last one on each of the saves?

I did it so many times and deleted I got confused :(

Cris Pandry
11-29-2007, 06:51 AM
@Patti,

You only remove the .zip suffix. Not the .zip in the middle of the file name!

As said above, you should have two files then, called save18.zip.001 and save18.zip.002 respectively. Then use HJSplit to Join them. HJSplit expects a .001 file name by default. After it's finished a few ms later, you should have save18.zip.

Then follow the instructions above.

HTH? :)

(The reason for all this unnecessary indirectness is the server file size limit for one and I had to add the extra .zip suffix to 'fool' the server, as it won't accept .001 or .002 files etc.)

Btw, I think the minigames both sucked and wiped. Almost pulled my hair out there :frusty: . I wonder what sick mind came up with that? You where better of pounding away on your keyboard like in fahrenheit. You remember...left right left right....anyway. Too much pixelhunting, you have to look really carefully or you'll miss things and start thinking ïf maybe there's a bug. And the main character, what's his problem? He cries like a little schoolgirl whenever he sees a spider or a small wound, and when he encounters a secret station with robots he doesn't blink?!?! And his voice....aaargh. (like I said before, I played the german version) I hope the english voice actor is better. I found the atmosphere good, there wasn't much music and I didn't care for the Island parts, find a stick, find a rock, find another rock, find another stick. The nightmares were the best parts. But I'll take a gothic horror story anytime. (waiting for black mirrror 2).

It doesn't show?!

You mean you can NOT see the .zip at the end of the filename? If so, it's possible that your 'View' settings are not set to see the extension. You could try going to the menu, Tools->Folder Options->View then UNtick the 'Hide extensions for known file types' option. That should do it. :) (This is for XP btw).

When you d/l the file e.g. to your desktop, the file is called "save018.zip.001.zip".

To remove the .zip suffix you right click on the file, choose 'Rename' and hit the End key on the keyboard, then backspace over first the 'p', then the 'i', then the 'z' and finally the '.'. Press Enter, or click away from the file name and you'll get a warning about changing the file extension, but just click on 'Yes' and you have a file called "save18.zip.001".

Ok, wait a while and I'll upload it here and edit appropriately...

Edit:

Ok here it is... Use HJSplit as explained earlier in the thread.

As you can appreciate, this save will have taken care of the more immediate matter in the cabin itself, so you only have the remaining tasks to fulfill, which IIRC don't require much frantic mouse clicking. ;) The clock is still ticking though of course. :)

Surely this goes to prove the need for a patch, and I empathise with you for what must be a pretty frustrating time getting through these sequences.

Again, IIRC, I don't think there's any more to worry about after this right up to the end of the game, but someone'll probably correct me there.

Hmm... this game has said to be made by the developer of Black Mirror and Ni-Bi-Ru.... Well, I bit disagree there. "Future Games" was a Publisher to Those games, yes, but the developer was "Unknown Identity" and that name I haven't seen around this game. The developer to Next Life is "Future games", the one that published Black Mirror and Ni-Bi-Ru. Maybe that would explain the differences for us, who are comparing it to those two. I believe, that the developer is not same.

What a good time I was having playing the game when the construction site dream sequence side game hit me with a great big disappointing shock. I cannot play those things. That's why I buy adventure games and not arcade games. I was lucky to get 6 white dots lit up after trying for over a half hour beating on the freaking arrow keys. If there does not exist a cheat to get past these side games my experience with Next Life has just come to an abrupt end. How many of these stupid momentum defeating fiascos are in this game? We can add info to our games database like dead ends, pixel hunting, timed sequences for example. I just added the timed sequences to Next Life's info.

Very soon the Games A-Z (http://www.adventuregamers.com/games.php) data base will be searchable so if you wanted to look for games that have timed sequences (so you could avoid them, as definitely not everyone likes them), you can. :)

Also you can see any red flags like that when you look up a specific game as well.

Well, you didnt miss much greybeard, I finished the game last night thanx to Cris Pandry, but I was thoroughly miffed by the whole game.....not my cup of tea at all.

I prefer the Broken Sword games, and have yet to find any that come up to scratch.

I havent heard of either of the games you mention, but I will watch out for them, thanx.:D

We can add info to our games database like dead ends, pixel hunting, timed sequences for example. I just added the timed sequences to Next Life's info.

Wonderful! How about info about puzzles. Some of the old Access Technology games (read: Tex Murphy) allowed you to solve the puzzles with a hot key. If the player is up to the challenge more power to them. But give us folks who are just looking for an adventure game a way out so we can play them as well.

I usually am able to head these problems off by previews and reviews but I saw nothing about Next Life that would lead me to believe that these timed sequences or arcade action sequences would be a problem or I never would have purchased this game. Perhaps I missed it then it's my bad for buying it anyway.

Well, here I am stuck again.. I am stuck at that bloody heart thing. I know what I have to do, but I do not have the reflexes to do it..

Has anybody got a saved game just past that bit..
Whoever invented those timed bits, they should be taken out the back and shot.. other than the timed bits, I am enjoying the game..

i would appreciate it if you could give me a saved game before third day :in the construction area nightmare. There seems to be a bug there.I have put the screws from the first toolbox in the bucket and nothing happened.thanks

Go right to the end of the level where the lift is. Now go past the lift and step onto the small platform. Now look on the floor. It's one of those hotspots that won't show until you walk there unfortunately!

Im on the second dream, already crashed, got out of car. I have found one boot, by the trailer but have found nothing else. I have the electrocuted guy, the unconcious couple, and of course my wound and "call for help". However I can't seem to get any further? I put the wooden plank up on the undercarriage, and it wont let me get a brick still, and there is nothing else that shows up as clickable, around the undercarriage area. Ive waled all around but found no other items. I need a simple hint, not a solution just a hint of what to do next.

Hmm... this game has said to be made by the developer of Black Mirror and Ni-Bi-Ru....

Hi,
check the credits in manual and credits of Black Mirror or Nibiru (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/nibiru-age-of-secrets), you will find same people, Next Life was created with the same team as Nibiru, only bigger :)

It's been awhile but if I remember right, you use the grass on the stick to create the fire and then use the fire on the log.

Finally I did it !

I was in the place for collecting stones and I shot 5 stones starting to a place slightly below the shiny spot and moving the sling upwards a little to spot haigher than the shiny spot, the fifth stone did it.

I'm stuck earlier than anyone I've read about yet, the Main Menu screen. When I first start the game, a few seconds before the Adventure Co. splash comes up, my cursor disappears. The main menu comes up and I see something round in the upper left corner that I suppose is probably the cursor, but no mouse I've tried can make it move. I can't do anything except Alt-Tab away and/or close it with Task Manager. The mouse/cursor operate normally again as soon as I Alt-Tab away.

The Adventure Company hasn't responded to a couple email requests for support.

My DirectX and video drivers are up to date. I'm running Win2Ksp4 on a P4-3.0, 2g ram, 7600GT-256 video, SB Audigy 4 sound, machine I put together.

Any suggestions? Does anybody know anyone who has gotten the game (not the demo) to run under Win2K? I'm not the only one with this problem.

Beats having to eat the $30 I suppose, but I wanted to play it. Oh well.

Did you click on the platform before you click on the bar? When i had this problem i simple had to click on the platform to walk there first and then the cursor change on the bar. If the cursor turn green you can pick it up. I don't thing that you are missing something
Hope this will help

I just finished this game and I want to thank those of you who posted hints and save games to help me get through it. At first, I really didn't think I was going to finish this game. I found the voice acting and translations somewhat bizarre and the pace of gameplay incredibly slow. I kept thinking I was going to quit, especially when I got to the first timed puzzle, with the floating balls. Somehow I managed to get through that one, turning off the volume helped, I found Adam awfully discouraging :( Every time he said "I can't do it!" my heart would start to race and my hands would shake. I used save games to get past the other two minigames... I tried and tried and tried but I just wasn't getting anywhere.

Despite my frustrations, I found this game really growing on me as I played. The characters are quirky, and sometimes downright nonsensical, perhaps something was lost in translation, it doesn't appear as if it was ever glanced over by an English speaker, but I found their individual personalities and stories really came through, I don't think I've really seen character development like that in a game before.

Despite all of its flaws, I really enjoyed this game. After a point, I even found myself amused by Adam's ambulatory reluctance. I nearly died laughing at one point when he said "I'd better walk slow - I wouldn't want to spill it!" I couldn't help laughing at the unbelievably tacky panty shots too. I thought it had a certain artiness, as well as a cult/camp appeal, kind of like if Andrei Tarkovsky and Russ Meyers designed an adventure game together.

I agree with you and also i haven't heard anyone who had not problems with the timed puzzles in that game. The first one was i little bit easier than the others. The second one at the crash scene was the hardest for me and i request for a saved game to continue... And Adam was walking really slow...

Hi Volkana,

No, Dorathy didn't mention the wire. She was standing in the doorway of her cabin, complaining about the rain & such. Every attempt to speak to her yeilded the same response. Adam's second attempt to approach the bell tower door was not successful. He wouldn't even approach the stoop. Kept saying, "It won't work this way." If you have anything to offer at this point, I would certainly be most grateful!!

Thanks bunches:)

Hi, I just found this forum.
I am basically at the point of wishing painful torture upon whoever created the seat belt reaction time puzzle (if you can actually call it a puzzle). Seriously, I can manage to finish one wedge, but 3 within the time given is too much. Does anyone know if there are any tricks to solving that puzzle or a possible way around it all together? Thanks!

Hi
First of all the official english site is awful and crap. There isnt any technical support there and i am kind of lost.First problem:I cannt save the changes i make in resolution and other factors in graphics..I press ''Save Changes'' and nothing happens.
Second i got stuck in a screen.I mean the cursor disappeared and i cannot exit...AWFUL.
tHIRD:THE LEADING CHARACTER HAS A DISTURBING ACCENT..I mean couldnt they get a better voice actor??
Fourth..the whole animation-graphic situation seems preety crappy to me and not inovative or something (that was not a technical problem i know :)
I have the authentic english retail edition of the game and i cannot play it.I am getting used for this to happen...every ''decent'' game has bugs nowadays :P That' s why all pc gaming industry produces worst and worst games because funs let go their favourite hobby-pc gaming.Something i will probably have to do soon...:P

The game ran fine for me, so I can't comment on most of your specific problems. Have you restarted the game after making changes, some games need to be restarted for the settings to take effect.

Yes, the voice acting and the English translation are quirky and bizarre and yet... I think some people will agree with me that this is part of what gives this game it's cultish charm. I thought I would hate this game for its many flaws and molasses slow graphics but the funny little people with their bad personalities and worse accents began to grow on me. In the end, I thinks it's character development that makes this game a winner. Hope you can get through your problems and give it a proper chance.

There are actually some save game files earlier in the thread (way earlier, which is why you didn't see them). :)

They're in this post (http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=449611). You also need an unzipping program and if you read the posts following, there is one that explains where you need to put the game files so they'll work.

I hope that helps, as I haven't played the game myself. :) Those stuck points are frustrating.

Server won't allow files greater than 97K! pooh...)
