i'm in the mood for a good creepy/scary/spooky game. is there anything out right now that's worth playing, whether it's for purchase online or in store?
thanks for the suggestions.

I always like to recommend the white chamber (http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,560) (which I liked significantly more than our reviewer). It's really quite scary.

AMBER: Journey's Beyond is my favourite scary game.

Hmm, I've missed The White Chamber, got to check that one out.
I'm playing Penumbra Overture (Episode One) (http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,741) at the moment and I highly recommend it. It's a very eerie game.

Does it have to be an adventure game?
If not, go play Clive Barker's Undying :)

I'll put in another good word for The White Chamber. It's very slickly produced, and quite decently scary. My only real complaint about it is the excessive gratuitous swearing, but as long as you don't mind that too much, you should enjoy the game.
And it's free! What more can you ask?
+1 to Dark Fall.
Thanks to all who recommended White Chamber - never heard of it, just picked it up, looks good!

Barrow Hill is another really eerie game. I just finished playing it about a month or two ago, and I enjoyed it a lot. Tonnes of foreboding atmosphere and an interesting storyline. Here's a link to the website (http://www.barrow-hill.co.uk/).

thanks for the suggestions. i've played some and can't get a hold of others. i do own barrow hill and dark fall but never finished them. both i found a little confusing. maybe i just wasn't paying attention.
perhaps i'll have to dust off dark fall and give it another try.
Haven't played the White Chamber yet but I can definitely recommend AMBER. It's pretty scary in places and full of atmosphere. The interface is simple point and click with no fancy rendering, but the graphics are very good and the story is highly imaginative and full of detail that holds your attention. The puzzles are moderately hard and provide a good break from the scariness. I like the ending because it fixes all the ugly situations and leaves the player feeling fine -- a really spooky story with a happy ending. It's one of those games that stays with you for a long time afterwards.
With Dark Fall, you HAVE to take notes. Copious notes. I actually enlisted my wife to take notes for me; she was as scared as I was the whole time.
Definitely worth replaying. Scariest game I think I've ever played.

i have a copy of amber but never played it because it doesn't work on xp. from the digging i've done, i've found no way to get around this. is that right?
as for darkfall, i'm back at it and it is very very very creepy.
also, this new game from the creator of darkfall, lost crown, looks like a very good ghost game. looking forward to that.

Dark Fall was definetley eerie =P LOVED IT! AMBER is in it's own category, that game was def. one that I will always remember playing, I actually dug out my old computer to play it again just for kicks LOL Scratches isn't bad, it could have been better, but I enjoyed it for the most part all through out, and there was definetley a couple moments and noises in there that got my heart rate goin a lil :P I dunno how good of a judge I am though, If anyone remembers last half of darkness lmfao I used ta jump when I went into the little girls bedroom and they ended up popping up and you as vampires and the computer sound went off HAHAHA you have to have played it to know what I mean but its a very very old game :P
Some others you might want to try if you havn't yet: (most quite older ;))
The old Jack the Ripper
I Have No Mouth and I must Scream
The Dark Eye
The Blackstone Cronicals
Sanitarium
System Shock 2
The 7th Guest
The 11th Hour
Phantasmagoria
Darkfall 2 (not as scary as 1)
Zork Nemesis
Depends of ur idea of scary but those one's definetley all have the "scary" elements in them <3
