I'm trying to install Gabriel Knight 2 on my Windows XP but so far I have been unable to. I'm very worried that this might be because of a scratch that has appeared on the first CD despite the fact that I take very good care of my CDs.

Anyway, when I put the CD in and click the "Install" button that appears on the autoplay launcher, the screen flickers and the install program automatically minimizes. I can see "Sierra On-Line Setup" on my taskbar but I can't seem to open it. I can also hear the Sierra logo music play. But I can't seem to maximize the darn setup screen.

If anyone has any experience with running GK2 on Windows XP, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Even if you got it working, I'd like to know, because then I'd know that the problem is probably that nasty scratch that's on the CD. Then I'd probably hang myself. Just kidding.

GK2 seems to work fine on my sisters XP computer. :)

Dusty - I had that very problem on XP. I have yet to find anyone else who had it so I was never able to share what I figured out! I'm so excited!

The problem is that my XP apparently doesn't like a version of one file that's used for the install program. The file is setup.sol. It's (apparently) the file that makes the Sierra logo display while the fanfare plays. I've found two ways around the problem:

1) If you've installed other Sierra games, you may have a program on your computer called Sierra Setup & Uninstall. Check the Sierra folder in your Start menu. If you have it, launch this program and install GK2 this way. (If you don't have it on your computer, you might check any other Sierra games on your shelf from the early to mid 90s... I think this program showed up on my machine along with KQ7.) I could try to email you a copy of this program but I'm not positive it'll work.

2) If you can't use the Setup / Uninstall program as described above, copy ALL the files from your GK2 CD#1 onto your hard drive. Replace the setup.sol file with a setup.sol file from a different Sierra game (I used one from GK1). Then install from this folder, rather than from the CD. Once you've installed the game, you can delete the contents of CD#1 from your hard drive. If you can't find an older version of setup.sol, I can email this to you as well.

Let me know if either of these solutions work for you.

EDIT: This same problem happens on some other Sierra games, such as LSL7, too. Following the steps above should fix it. If anyone needs the files mentioned in these workarounds, PM me with your email address and I'll send them.

I have the same problem! Apparantly I need the setup.sol file too, does anyone have it? If so, please send it to empty86@gmail.com

thanks in advance!:)

The first thing you should do is copy your game cd to your hard disk. You could also try to create cd image and use the verify option to see if the content matches the original cd.

If the cd is copied without problems (CRC Redundancy errors), you know the cd is fine and that the problem is caused by something else...

This is a well known problem with some of the Sierra setups. It does have a very easy solution. Right click on the Sierra setup button on the Taskbar and choose "Move" and then hold the right or left cursor until the setup window appears.

I can get the first part..

(verplaatsen = move)

than some cursor appears with 4 arrows in it, normally used to move something.. but whatever I do or hold.. nothing appears.

Ahh, glad to see you're all set. I tried emailing the file to you tonight and Gmail rejected it saying it was an illegal attachment. :(
