Hi all
I have just purchased the complete set of King's Quest (1-7) for XP. However, I can't get the sound working, which is vital to KQ5-7 (from memory).
I keep getting the message which is "unable to initialise your audio hardware".
Anyone know what I need to do?
Spec: P4 2.4 1gb memory, DVD, Windows XP
Thanks
Karen x
First of all - which versions of episodes 5-7 are you using, the DOS versions or the Windows versions? (DOS versions install using install.exe and Windows using setup.exe)
I'm going to assume you're using the DOS versions because the Windows version of KQ6 generally doesn't run at all under XP.
You probably just need to use the GoSierra patch. You'll find it here (http://www.tawmis.com/collector/Utilities/SoundUtilities/GOSiERRA.html).
If that doesn't seem to fix it, you might need to tinker around with the audio settings by running the version of install.exe that's in the game folder on your hard drive.
(By the way - is this the new collection that recently came out, or an older one? The suggestions I'm making are for the older version; I'm not sure how you'd do this stuff with the new version since it installs differently.)

But it is relatively easy to get the Windows version of KQ6 to run in XP.
There is no need to use GOSiERRA with DOSBox. With cycles set to around 7-8000 the game will run fast enough, but will avoid the SB initialization problem. You can also mimic Sierra's old work around of turning off the Turbo switch to start the game and back on after the SB driver initializes to play the game.
As to the setup with the new collection, the games are missing the INSTALL.EXE, so any changes to the settings have to be made by manually editing the RESOURCE.CFG. The patches that I made for the collections restore the missing install files. The patches can be found on the VU boards and my site, The Sierra Help Pages.

Never worked for me. Blue screen of death and everything.
