View Full Version : Worst character in a popular adventure game?

So I am replaying Grim Fandango for the first time since it cameout back in the day. I really hate Glottis. Seriously. I HATE HIM! So it got me to thinking. What are the worst characters that you just can't stand in a more popular adventure game?

April Ryan and Crow.

I loved them...

and Glottis, too...

yikes!

I would vote for that damned purveyor of previously-owned worm-infested half-rotten "ships," Stan from MI1.

We shoot you now like an arrow into the wind. May you pierce the heart of the wind itself, and drink the blood of flight. Speed is the food of the great Glottis. Speed bring you life. Come back to us some day.

I also never liked Glottis, but then again I'm not a big fan of Grim Fandango... <hides>

Anyways, the worst character in a popular adventure game is Kate Walker! My God! She has got to be the most boring heroine ever!

Most annoying: Stan (MI) and Nilo (Pandora Directive).

No, most boring and annoying is Nina Kalenkov from Tunguska :)

And when I was watching Gundam Seed, I absolutely hated Flay, she was so horrible, that I was glad when she died in the end.

Well the closest I've come to encounter an anoying carachter I suppose would have to be Brian Basco, mostly in the first Runaway just cause he talked way too much and he allways tries a little to hard to be funny and Joshua as well, come to think of it, I didnt care much for Rincewind in the first Discworld game either, but then I guess it's because I've never understood that kind of humour, he was allright in the second game though just like Brian!

That stupid main character from Fable (the AG not the RPG)...why the heck can't I recall his name now? ...Blond, irritating, nasty, mean spirited, puerile, and yet somehow very very boring too. He never had anything witty to say and I hated him so much that I abandoned the game part way through.

...Ooooh! But how could I forget Ann from Paradise? She absolutely deserves the crown for dullest, drabbest, most apathetic heroine ever.

In fact, the ending feels a lot like the programmers did much the same.

I'd also have to put a vote in for Kent, the PC in Normality. There's just too much effort to make him the cool spaced-out hippie fighting against the boring establishment. It just gets irritating after a while.

Brian Basco. He is way to normal for his own good. Also, Joshua. Oh, boy, I despise Joshua. I can't believe HE was the character they had to bring back in the second...

Yup, I agree. Didn't like Glottis either. His gags were predictable, overdone and I mostly cringed and waited for them to end. He seemed out-of-place in the dark, quirky world of Manny. Glottis would have fit better in a children's TV show, like Barney the Dinosaur.

Worst character ever? Man, that's a tough question. So many awful characters to choose from. So many adventure games put in characters whose role is simply to annoy you. I'm going to vote for the mysterious Latino shaman in The Longest Journey who knows exactly what's going on the whole time, but decides for no reason other than dramatic irritation to inform April Ryan in a series of wordy, idiotic riddles.

Some really interesting replies here! I didn't know there was so much hate for Runaway and it's cast. I really love everyone in Runaway games. I agree with one of the posters before saying that Glottis doesn't fit the dark world of Grim Fandango. That's 100% how I feel. I liked every other character in that game, so he just seemed really out of place.

Nail on the head. Further more I'd put just about every character in The Longest Journey for annoyingly long dialog and voice acting.

Al Emmo for his voice.

I think Glottis was a terrific character, but I can see why some would find him irratating. About him feeling out of place, I believe this is because Glottis is essentially the symbol of good in the Grim Fandango universe. Yes, he's naive, but he's the only character who never feels or shows negativity to anyone (whilst even Meche turns at one point). He's the binary opposite of Manny who's cunning, cynical and quite selfish (to begin with).

I was annoyed by Raiden in MGS2 at first but as I progressed through the game I became sympathetic. In contrast Brian Basco I wanted to give him a chance but couldn't persevere with the game, despite it being a mainstream PC adventure title.

I like Glottis from Grim Fandango. But i have to be honest there were moments during the game where he did annoy me. Especially when he made those driving noises on the Bone Wagon.

I didn't really like Nina from Secret Files either, he voice was annoying and i didn't have any interest or care for her character.

I second a resounding vote for Fifi Le Yipcrap! Every time I consider replaying KQ7 I just remember that insanely high-pitched ear-piercing "yip yip yip yip yip yip"... then I lose my lunch and play KQ6 instead :)

Oscar, the "Ticket, Please" Automaton also bugged me; although I think he redeemed himself in Syberia II.

What's wrong with Mustavio? He was so overdone, that he was actually funny. :) But the wolf/dragon/boy, what was his name again? My god, he was BADLY acted.

My vote for dullest and the most annoying character goes to... Umang from Aura: Fate of the Ages. Congratulations, Umang, how do you feel? Well, maybe I'm not being fair. The game was so bad in so many levels that maybe Umang was just the topping, the dot on the i, if I may say so.

So I'll choose again. This time I choose Joshua from Runaway 2. He was very annoying (as somebody said already).

It's kinda strange, a lot of people are complaining about the acting in GK2... Objectively, I can understand why (especially when Gabriel does the more funny/stupid things) but it really didn't stop me from enjoying the game, or liking Gabe's character, maybe I just got used to the acting quickly enough to 'suspend the disbelief'.

Pretty much any non-playable character in EMI was annoying, but here's a list of the worst offenders:

The ship figurine (or whatever she's called)
Otis
The policeofficer (?)
The perfume salesman
The big woman at the docks on Melee Island
Ozzy Mandrill

But more or less everyone was annoying in EMI.

But more or less everyone was annoying in EMI.

This is pretty much true, although -for me- Inspector Canard (the policeman in Lucre Island) was not that bad. Pegnose Pete was the one to enter my ignore list first.

Even if not altogether not likeable, the dullest one I've encountered has to be George Stobart from the first two Broken Sword games (haven't played the rest). I wasn't exactly offended by him in any way but he wasn't any fun to be with either.

Also, Laura Bow from the detective-mystery series was pretty badly done as well but that can also be said about her game(s) (I have only finished Amon Ra) so blaming her alone may not be that fair.

Last but not least, as already stated by someone in this thread, Gabriel Knight's portrayal through the image of a real actor in Beast Within was downright horrible in comparison to the pixelated figure of the first game.

I must apologize to everyone who hates Brian from Runaway. I still love the first game and an in the process of enjoying the second, but I have noticed his character (that is moral character) is much lower in the second than in the first. I just played chapter two wherein he is trying to rescue his stripper girlfriend. In the process he *apparently* has sex with a Hawaiian girl. What a loyal guy! I am sure Gina Timmins would appreciate his taking time out of her rescue to score a few points!

Well, anyway, I still love and defend the Runaway series but Brian does seem much more of a scoundrel in the second than the first. Nevertheless, I would still take Runaway over rude little April Ryan anyday.

Random post for the first time in ages, but Omg I totally forgot about him! He was incredibly annoying. Not only did he speak verrrrry slowly, but everytime you said anything to him you had to wait about 10 secs while the stupid animation of him fiddling with his damn sculpture played through from start to finish.

Any of his dialogue that was meant to be funny just fell flat. By the time he delivered his 'funny' line an hour had passed since you'd asked the character a question and you'd totally forgotten what it was you were bloody talking about in the first place! That and you were seething inside wanting to stick his damn statue in a rather sunless but personal place of his!

Aside from him I agree with Glottis from GF, Oscar from Siberia (plus most of the rest of the cast to be frank) and some of the more long winded characters in The Longest Journey (as much as I love the game overall)

The entire cast of Keepsake.

I actually really liked all the puzzles in Keepsake but Lydia, the dragon/cat/wolf/boy, mustavio, her dying friend, and obnoxious headmaster, all made me want to scream. I literally dreaded the cut scenes but I was so happy to be playing an adventure game that wasn't just inventory puzzles that I stuck it out till the end. April Ryan was also the worst animated character in ANY cutscene EVER. Her frame in the bed scene at the beginning and when she's working on her painting - her stick figure makes Kate Moss look obese in comparison.

April Ryan was also the worst animated character in ANY cutscene EVER. Her frame in the bed scene at the beginning and when she's working on her painting - her stick figure makes Kate Moss look obese in comparison.

Well, she was a poor art student :D Maybe she couldn't afford good, nutritious food :frown:

Yep.

Also, I hate George Stobbart and his stupid american accent, who say things like "Searching a garbage can? What a stupid idea.". Die, George.

So...curious...you hate American accents in general? Or just his?

His. In my version (the french one, that is), he speaks french perfectly, but with a very heavy accent, which is usually not compatible, and is mostly heard in radio commercials.
And the use of the past tense is pretty weird, too.

April Ryan was good in The Longest Journey, but for some reason in Dreamfall she annoyed me a lot.

She seemed emo-fied, IMO. She was so witty and and a great attitude in TLJ, but in Dreamfall she was like deprest all the time. :P But its probably part of the character development. ;)

April Ryan and Crow.

Blaphemy! ;) Joshua from Runaway 2 is the WORST and definately most annoying character in ANY game! Its not only that he has one of the most annoying voices Ive ever heard. He also messes up everything you do in the game, and he talks all the time! Neverending dialogue with that highpitched whining voice! I actually had problems continuing the game every time he was around.

Yeah, I understand she mustn't not be the same April as in TLJ and it was part of her character development...but she was now adult, yet she acted often like annoying, angry little girl. :)

EDIT: speaking of Runaways...mind me, I forgot the name of that guy, but that "funny reggae pothead" in my opinion never really was funny but annoying. I thought he was overdone. And yes, Joshua was annoying too.

wow... looks like runaway characters take the cake here with April in second.

Funny how both of those games are either on the top of a persons recommended list or at the top of their 'worst adventure' list.

Very polarizing games.

I never noticed that April was particularly rude in TLJ, Crow on the other hand! Ofcourse there hasn't been a good leading lady on the adventure scene since Zanthia in Kyrandia Hands of Fate but April is harmless I thought. Besides rude is fun that's why everyone loves Simon The Sorcerer!

I would allso like to add Ace Ventura to the list of annoying caracthers!

Yeah...I was mystified too. I thought the English version George was quite good; it didn't occur to me that he might suck in another language.

ok, since I can't come up with my own MOST annoying character, I'll just reply to all of your's:

The entire cast of Runaway.

Yes! Brian is a particularly annoying twit. So much so, that I have absolutely no urge to platy the sequel.

I just realised who the most anoying carachter ever is, it's ofcourse that Rodhan guy or whatever his name is, the guy making a sculpture in Discworld Noir that spook soooooo sloooooowly, there has been some really memorable anoying carachters in Discworld over the years but that one has got to take the price as the worlds most anoying carachter!

I'd forgotten about him!!! made me want to reach through the screen and throttle him!!

But I liked April - attitude, dress, everything, at least in TLJ. Dreamfall was well, Dreamfall. I've made my opinions on that particularly clear elsewhere.

Must conclude that Al Emmo wasn't a "popular" game or else he would be the most hated character (I can't stand Woody Allen either).

Seconded by Tony Tough. HE'S NOT FUNNY!!!

I think there where two versions of Keepsake (correct me if I'm wrong) cant remember wich one I played, but I dont recall being bugged by any character. All I do remember from that game is the magnificant scenery.

I agree about the char. in Runaway - except for Joshua and the artist. But kill Tony Tough and dismember Al Emmo.

I recently finished "The Secret File: Tunguska" and OMG! I'm surprised this topic severely lacks that game! XD Or maybe so many here simply hasn't played this game?

Voice acting, throughly was awful! ( and awful voice acting tends to make characters annoying to me)

Nina Kalenkov? LMAO her character's voice and way of speaking reminded me of those stereotypical cheerleader mega-bitches from high school movies! Always when there was serious situation in game, and Nina opened her mouth it just always felt so out of place.

As a matter of fact, the voice acting in general in this game was so awful that it actually started amuse me. Instead of annoying me, I started take amusement and laugh at the result. Especially Nina. So it depends on the angle you look at it, whether she's annoying or not. :P

If you have played Keepsake, you know that every character needs acting classes (or reading lessons). It is so annoying. The dialogue lacks the emotion you would expect...it just doesn't match the words. It is sad considering this is an amazing game with great puzzles. They put so much time into the story and graphics, you would think they would have done the same for the acting. Does anyone know if there is a DX to this? Someone mentioned another version?????

hm...that would be me.

The copy I was playing wasn't mine, it was borrowed, so I can't check it for you. But I know I read about two different english releases somewhere.
Voice acting was ridiculous on my copy also. Mustavio was so over the top it was actually funny, but I think some was slightly toned down in mine.

Did a little search and found a voice patch: http://wickedstudios.com/keepsake/

Yeah, the North American release had new voice acting for several of the key roles, but as you've now spotted, that patch is available to update the other English release.

I'm going to nominate the Owl from Simon the Sorcerer 1 that gives you clues of what to do if you can stand to listen long enough and make the misstake of clicking on him and Swampling can be a bit annoying too but he's still okay.

OH MY GOD! He only helped Brian with ONE thing in Runaway 2 and then hung around like a bad smell. I HATED it when you needed so many items on the ship, and friggin' Joshua had TAKEN them ALL!

Not only did we hate him but all the Runaway chars did too, so that says something about how REALLY UNLIKEABLE he is!!!

I actually thought that part of the game was pretty funny:
While you were doing your usual adventuring/taking everything that isn't nailed down, so was Joshua. And if he had finished his device five minutes earlier, he would've actually been of some help!

He was extremely annoying in the rest of the game though.

I really didn't like that mole-man guy who lived in a tree in TLJ. It took him about 2 minutes to get up and down the stairs, and every time he talked it would wind out for about a minute per sentence. And Cortez from TLJ annoyed me. If you asked him a question he'd give you the longest possible answer, complete in riddle-form and stupid words.

I understand and fully commiserate with the Mole-Man Guy from TLJ. His conversations were a bit... laborious. Cortez I didn't mind so much, except that he knew everything in advance and yet told you nothing, deliberately.
