Secret of MI - treasure hunting

I have the map and shovel and I know I need to find the treasure in the forest.

I am not sure what to consider right, left and back so I just end up getting lost. Any hints on how to navigate that forest maze?

Do you understand how you're supposed to be using the map?

I know I had to ignore the numbers. I ended up looking at the forest map they had in UHS hints because I didn't have much patience with my navigationally challenged self. :P

The only thing that annoyed me (and I should know this by now having played a few old LucasArts games) that when you get to the last screen you have to move off screen a bit to see the thing you're looking for.
