This sounds like an issue with your graphics card in the laptop, although I'd have thought the GeForce 6200 Go would be okay for Broken Sword 4 (assuming that's what is in your Sony Vaio FS-Series). Hmm.
Have you tried updating/downgrading your graphics drivers as well?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.47.html is probably what you need, otherwise go here (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) and select the appropriate options from the three lists at the bottom of the page.

It doesn't matter, you'll need to run it once it's downloaded so put it somewhere that you'll be able to find it easily.

Uh oh. I had a feeling you were going to say something like that.
It looks like your particular Sony Vaio FS-Series is the lower spec version of the available ones. That intel graphics chipset doesn't support pixel shader 1.1, so isn't good enough for BS4 :( (Or I might be wrong, but that sounds like the problem)

Intel? that means you got a onboard graphic card, right? Broken Sword 4 doesn't support onboard graphic cards

I have just installed Broken Sword 4.
When I try to run it I get the message "There was an error starting Xdirect".
and then the message "The error message has been copied to the clipboard. Please paste it in into the bug report."
The start-up when closes.
I then installed the copy of DirectX 9.0c which comes with the game but the same thing still happens.
I have all the system requirements.
Please help.

whats even more annoying is that i loaded Broken sword 4 on to my laptop which is older and has very poor specs and it worked but because its so slow and jumpy i cant play it on there is there a way i could transfer the save onto my pc and play it on there ? would that work ?

I don't think the 'directx didn't start-error' has anything to do with whether or not you have an onboard graphic-card. They do state that BS4 doesn't support on-board cards, but that doesn't mean you can't get it to work.
I had the same error and the reason is that BS4 wont run with the newer graphic-drivers - so try to downgrade you graphics-drivers (preferably by uninstalling the newer ones first - as things might get confused otherwise). When I first installed I used drivers at least half a year old - upgrading to get it to run bettter (what idiocy) resulted in the error. When I rolled back my driver it worked again....
I think it might be possible to get it to run on an onboard card - the problem is that the programming is so bad that even on specs higher than recommended it is rather laggy - so the speed of the game might be very low - and make it unplayable - (also because the control-scheme is really stupid).

I can't help you, but I have the same problem myself. I already had DirectX 9, but when the message came up I installed it from the disk. Same problem. Installed off the disk about 10 more times. No different. So THEN I downloaded it off the net and installed. No help. I have an Acer Travelmate 2490, 512mb of RAM. A good enough graphics card to run Broken Sword 3 and a graphics accelerator. Is it maybe that I installed bs4 on my D drive instead of C?

well... I HAVE A SOLUTION FOR YOU GUYS.
I've already posted this about a year from now... anyway..
if you want to play BROKEN SWORD 4 with unsoppurted video card, you have to download a program called 3D-ANALYZE (download it from here: http://www.falconfly.de/downloads/3danalyzer-v234.rar ((it's about 800 kb)) ) or you can visit the official site of the program (http://www.tommti-systems.de)
after downloading it open the program and press (SELECT) and choose the game. after that check these sittings: (1) force SW TnL (2) emulate pixel shader caps (3) force max. pixel shader version 1.4.
then press (RUN).
now the game will work just fine. if the game is working slow make sure to wait about three minutes after pressing RUN.
i have intel 945 family chipset. it's not supported by the game but this program is a miracle. HAVE FUN WITH THIS FANTASTIC GAME.
excuse my english 'cause it's not my native language
