View Full Version : Forgotten Gems

Forget for a minute the best AGs or the latest AGs. I am looking for "forgotten gems." "Oldies, but goodies." AGs that may not have competed with LucasArts or Sierra (although some of Sierra's might be considered "forgotten gems" - like Conquest of Camelot, Codename Iceman, Manhunter, or Gold Rush), but they were fun to play. I do not require they be available at abandonware sites, but the idea is to list games worthy of playing that are not traditionally available in stores anymore.

My list would include:

Amazon : Guardians of Eden
Earthrise (flawed by type in interface)
Future Wars
The Gene Machine
Inherit the Earth : Quest for the Orb
Rise of the Dragon

Any others?

Ahhh... I remember having fun with Rise of the Dragon on Sega CD back in the day.

Future Wars was a really great little game. I could name a few...

All the Legend Entertainment games, DreamWeb, the Dynamix games (Dragon, Heart of China!), Microprose's Dragonsphere, and Sanitarium. Oh so many more!

Cute old games, eh?

Let's see.. I believe "Riddle of Master Lu" kinda falls into that category and maybe "Azrael's Tear" which I never actually finished but seemed worth mentioning.

Also: "Faust: Seven games of the Soul" doesn't receive the credit it deserves, same as "Morpheus". Not very old those, but still kinda lost in oblivion.
Maybe "Flight of the Amazon Queen" will capture your interest as well, since it resembles LucasArts' games but doesn't share their fame. Plus, it's freeware now.

About Heart of China, I got it, still in itīs plastic cover, unopened, and what I can read on the back cover, the game itself is on 5.25" discs! :) Anyone interested in this game? Does it have some value?

You silly bean! Don't get rid of that! Keep it! That is one of the most gorgeous Dynamix (or any adventure game for that matter) boxes ever!! Just look at the clean signature Dynamix art direction and attention to detail on the back cover.... the map and how the character illustrations overlay it perfectly.... ugh! I could just scream. And the game is also a very cool, overlooked period masterpiece.

Yep, I know, the box is great, and I love it that the front box is "engraved", donīt know the right word for it! Iīd sure would like to play it someday, donīt got a 5.25" drive though, and I donīt want to open the game..

Oh yea.. another great quality about that gorgeous box... it's EMBOSSED! AAAH!

Pick up a copy on eBay for a few bucks. Get a 3.5" version and play it. I don't think it was ever available on CDrom but if so, get that version!

I also got Dreamweb, but itīs on a jewel case.
I remember playing it many years ago, I bought it from a bargain bin, I played almost the whole game, enjoyed it, and was surprised of the violence and sex scene in the game..

To, uh, "borrow" part of my post from the "underrated adventures" thread...

The Space Bar, from Boffo Games.

Hardly anyone I've encountered online has played it. The few who do and review it seem to get overly hung up on the Infocom-esque turn limit-based nature of the game (which, while definitely annoying, isn't a huge deal if you're careful).

But it has awesomely imaginative graphics (character design done by the same fellow who did the cantina aliens in Star Wars, IIRC), a lot of great voice acting (loved the "villain", the main character's partner, and the main character's PDA's AI, especially), an intriguing plot, a lot of very creative puzzle and character design, and some seriously wicked and funny humor. Not to mention my favorite type of interface (has a Gabriel Knight 3-like object-centric interface). The central point of being able to play through the memories of various aliens gives the game a lot of variety, as well.

It's hard as hell to find a copy of it, but I tend to recommend it to people whenever I get the chance. :) Definitely worth tracking down for anybody who likes comedic and/or sci-fi adventures.

Peace & Luv, Liz

<<<------ My avatar says it all.

This game hardly ever gets a mention nowadays and yet, with the exception of The Pandora Directive, was probably the best adventure game/interactive movie combo ever released. The player will find unique puzzles and game tools in Spycraft that you won't have seen before in a game. Very good acting too. There are a couple of "action" shooting sequences but they're more akin to the pop-up target shooting sequence in Blade Runner and very short. The rest is pure CIA Agent stuff involving much reading and brain work.

A very strong story and something that you don't find much nowadays - the game actually comes to a conclusion at the end. ;)

There is one torture scene that some found distasteful but that can be turned off before the game is played. The game was put together with the expert Cold War knowledge of former heads of both the CIA and KGB - and both men had short roles in the game, adding authenticity.

I only wish Activision had done a sequel to The Great Game. :\

If you like Cold War, espionage or political thrillers this game is a must, even in it's 10-year-old state. :)

I second Duckman, :D Space Bar, Spycraft... :)

Rik Mayall was in Bud Tucker? Didn't know that. No wonder I couldn't finish the game, Mr. Mayall makes me go :r

Can I just add Stupid Invaders to the list? I know, I know... you either love it or you hate it. But when you love it, you LOVE it. :9

I'll list some that I consider forgotten gems:

The Dig
Dreamweb
Star Trek - 25th Anniversary
Star Trek - Judgement Rites
Star Trek - A final Unity
Bioforge
Gobliiins
Gobliins 2
Goblins 3

Maybe they're not forgotten on a global scale, but I'm pretty much alone among my friends to remember them...

Ah.. but the graphics, in my opinion, were what I loved about them. Especially Mission Critical and Death Gate.

I also loved the interface and the general feel of the Legend Entertainment Games. There was something about them that was so different than anything else out.

Has anyone ever played any of the Magnetic Scrolls games - Wonderland in particular? They are some of my favourites as well.

Fien
09-20-2006, 08:08 AM
Ah yes, Wonderland! Nice one. Quite easy too, if my memory serves me well.

I played all of the Magnetic Scrolls games but one. (Myth) They were very very very unforgiving. Even for those days of extremely unforgiving IF. Corruption was one of my favorites, because of the novel turn-based "real-time" aspect and you could follow people around, just like in the much more recent The Last Express. Infocom had one of those real-time ones too, I think.

I felt that the Kyrandia games were alright (though never great) after the first one, which suffers from just about every adventure game problem I can think of while lacking anything much in the way of an interesting plot.

Hand of Fate is fun, mind you :).

Me too. The artwork was always on a high level in Legend games. But there was a lack of animation, as all actions were described by text. In early games (Gateway, Eric the Unready) pictures were presented as little windows, in 16 colours, and for many people it wasn't enough..
I'm glad that this tradition remained until their last adventure (Blackstone). None of their games actually had a verb "use", which is often considered to be the first nail into coffin of IFs. I guess this is what you are talking about - Legends games were the only graphical adventures that had IF feeling about them..

Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender was entertaining. And Steve Meretzky of Infocom was involved in the making of the game. :)

R. Lacey, re Kyrandias, I have finally gotten them all with speech and it makes a great difference, esp The Hand of Fate, and I am still liking the graphics in them a lot. There was a fourth one thought about but it never happened.

The Legend games are awesome i agree with everyone on that.

I also loved the interface and the general feel of the Legend Entertainment Games. There was something about them that was so different than anything else out.

They were rich. No "I can't do that!" or "That doesn't work." in Death Gate. If you're trying to use a ladder to climb on the roof, when a rope should be used, then the game is going to explain why the ladder isn't fit.

Callahan's Crosstime Saloon and Death Gate are two incredible games, varied, gorgeous, fun, funny, clever, ... and i'm running out of superlatives.
The other Legend games rank a tad below in my lists, but they are still worth it by a huge margin.

And Spycraft was very impressive at the time. It felt like nothing else, it was gripping and thrilling.

I had all the (text) adventure games on cartridge for the Texas Instruments 99... ah, that was back in the day... Two-word commands only.

Would love to see them again in a PC-usable format, especially since I never finished some of them at the time. You could easily fit the whole collection on one CD-ROM nowadays.

One real goodie (that I did finish) was set in a nuclear power station, which you had to "disarm" before unstoppable meltdown started. You were alone in there because all the employees had died for some reason - radiation, I suppose. Right at the very end, after getting through all the security levels and everything, you make it to the control room. But you can't get in because a body is lying against the other side of the door...
OPEN DOOR
It seems to be stuck.
PUSH DOOR
It opens a crack, then stops. There seems to be something
blocking it on the other side.
... [ various attempts ] ...
PUSH HARD
You shove the door open.

"Push hard", I ask you. I won't even mention the "weigh anchor" japery in the pirate adventure.

Another one of the forgotten Sierra gems:

Gold Rush!

I love this game! One of the best adventure games from Sierra, and one that is too often forgotten these days. It featured great puzzles, tons of locations to explore, nice story line and addicting gameplay. Plus, there were three totally different paths to get through the middle part of the game, years before Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis featured that, and also some optional things you could do to get to a perfect score. :)

I have all the Dynamix games in good shape, original boxed on the amiga. That is, Rise of the Dragon, Heart of China and Willy Beamish. They're all great looking boxes, looks pretty exclusive for a game box. Unfortunately, Willy Beamish is the french box, but it's the english game at least. I'm not from France, so it's a little annoying though.

When you mentioned Another World, does anyone know, there was a sequel to it? Heart of The Alien...

Flashback was great, especially for Sega CD (Mega CD), i can't forget when i first got to the last 2 levels and hearing the sound of moving morph was so creepy and i was really scared :) And when i found journal, i was replaying the sequence over and over, just cause of that great music :) Raphael Gesqua did a great job on this game.

I think those are the Scott Adams adventures, aren't they? Search for the name, you should be able to find them without much trouble.

Best forgotten gems, eh? Well, I'd sound like a broken record if I went on about the Mercenary series again, so I'll just mention that the new MDDclone is available for free, and you must all play them now, and trust that they really are pure adventures even though they don't look it at first glance.

I have no idea. They were just issued as a series of cartridges for the TI. I suppose they must have been credited, but TI didn't make a song and dance about it. They were very proprietary about their software.

I'll have to go and have a look some time. Some time quite soon.

Since we're talking HOC, I'm a Sierra collector, and I had a partially sealed copy. I thought, 'f*** it', and ripped the remaining plastic off and it became 'my' copy.

Incidentally, I have two copies of HOC (Heart of China) and ROTD (Rise of the Dragon) for sale each, if anyone's interested.

Anyway. This kinda ties in with the 'most underrated adventure game' thread, doesn't it?

I said the 3 Dynamix classics, ROTD, WB and HOC as well, all excellent.

Discworld 1, not sure if it's forgotten, but it's excellent.

Do Flashback and such count as adventure games? They're platformers, IMO.

Whoo-hoo! You were quite right, GB, those old Texas Instruments cartridges were indeed Scott Adams adventures.

I have wasted no time in downloading them, and now I know what my next gaming fun is going to be! Hooray! I spent loads on those cartridges, and have always regretted not finishing most of them. There are even a few in the set that I never got round to owning.

The Gene Machine is a seriously underrated game. A wicked satire of the British class system, and so much more. The hero has to be one of the most obnoxious cretins ever. And it's a long game too. Remember when adventure games were really long?

Oh yea ... that was a great game. Similar to Lucas Arts games in terms of humor/sci fi mix. Sort of a Victorian age science fiction game with plenty of humor. I definitely recommend it.

Oh, yes, I remember playing the demo for The Gene Machine. It looked really good. But I never saw the game for sale anywhere. It's one of those "if I ever see it, I'll remember it" things tucked into the back of my mind.

Underrated? I always saw only positive reviews, with pretty high score, like 9/10 or 8/10 :)
And i dont think its forgotten either :)
But i must agree, it was a great game. I dont remember it much though...

How many people have played this game?

I still remember the day I was working at Big W (Australian department store) and had to put at least 10 copies of 3 Skulls of the Toltecs in the crusher. They were on the shelf for a few months at budget price ($15 to $10 to $5 to $.99) and the manager said fudge it, need the space for something else. ;(

I got one copy, played it but didn't think too much of it at the time. Didn't hold a candle to the Lucasarts games but replayed it again earlier this year and realised it deserved more recognition that it has gotten.

I'll take it over Freddy Pharkas any day for old western adventure gaming.

First off, Hello :)

Anyway I went through some old games of mine and I found Legend of Kyrandia: Malcolms Revenge.
That game was one of my first ( if not THE first) adventure game I played. Then I got hooked up again on those good ol' adventure games like Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, The monkey island series, loom, kings quest, Full Throttle, Gold Rush etc. It was like, how could I forget those games. Now I'm on the lookout for other adventerous games, perhaps even those you posted :)

Wasn't really what the thread starter was asking for, but what the heck :)

I'd say that just about the only forgotten gem I can recall would be...

Dreamweb.

I thought that the story, user interface, and graphics were pretty interesting. Unfortunately, I found the game nearly crippling because of some copy protection littered throughout the game. However, if you can get a copy, give it a go.

Dreamweb was interesting but the top view never did it for me. It also had a graphic sex scene so I just wanna warn all the kiddies out there.

Same graphics style as GK2 (FMV), but in first person.
Almost educational in some places, which is a big PLUS in my book.
Many places of historical importance to visit.
It has a charmingly clever Virtual Reality game implemented into the story.
Highly recommended !

Hell yea. Dreamweb was amazingly atmospheric. Even today it's still very very cool. The sounds and graphics really paint a futuristic adventure. I loved it. And I beat it in 2 days.

Here's one. How about Tony Tough and the Night of the Roasted Moths? I had the game a long time ago but it kept crashing on my old computer, so I tried it now on my new one and it looks really promising, although I haven't finished it yet. Anyone played this one?

I think everyone has unfortunately. Too many sound glitches, and a stupid story. The next one in develpment looks really nice. Lets hope they fixed the problems.
