View Full Version : Favorite movies of all time...
Yes, it's one of those clichéd topics about your favorite movies. Every forum needs one :D
Mine follow: (in no particular order)
Braveheart
Forrest Gump
Gladiator
A Beautiful Mind
Saving Private Ryan
Shawshank Redemption
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Lion King
Disney's Beauty and the Beast
Star Wars: all of 'em
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc
Lord of the Rings 1/2/ and 3 very soon, I presume
My main criterion for selecting favorite movies are how I felt right after the movie. Did I go "wow" or "aaaw" or did I shed a tear. Either one of the three lead me to select a good movie and all of the above really did one of them to me. If it means so much for you to know, I shed tears for A Beautiful Mind and Beauty and the Beast. :P
Anyway, what are your favorites?

You've got nothing here earlier than 1977. I find that very strange. Movies are over one hundred years old. Expand your horizons.
Le Voyage dans la lune
Metropolis
The General
Safety Last
Flesh and the Devil
Grand Hotel
Blessed Event
Little Caesar
The Kennel Murder Case
The Public Enemy
42nd Street
The Thin Man
Manhattan Melodrama
Morning Glory
Platinum Blonde
The Whole Town's Talking
Bringing Up Baby
Ninotchka
Confessions of a Nazi Spy
The Women
...and that's all before 1940.

Hey, I was just thinking we needed this thread! :D
rags: Agreed.
krkode: Heh, cool, I shed a tear in those too, and don't laugh, but I shed a tear once in... Winnie the Pooh.. :P Well not exactly, more just felt sad, mainly cause it made me think of something in my own life to be honest. One movie I did more than shed a tear in (and that's an understatement) is Fluke. Dunno how many of you have heard of it, but it's a very sad movie, and for some reason whenever I watch it I go through about half the movie being a bit sad but generally cheerful, and then, always at the exact same spot, I am crying my throat out (nearly choking :P) until the end of the movie. Maybe it's just me. The ending is actually good and quite funny. All I can tell you is that it's about a dog, the rest is just.. well, you gotta see it yourself.
Favorite movies that I can remember at the moment, in no particular order:
Fluke
Moulin Rouge
Independence Day
Pirates of the Carribean
Lots of Full length Disney cartoons: Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Alladin, The lion king etc.....
Amadeus (great film with great music)
Hook
Mrs. Doubtfire
Good Morning Vietnam(can you see a pattern?)
Tutsi
You've got mail
Sleepless in Seattle
A Beautiful Mind
I can't remember more right now :P
Robin Williams! *D
I have a similar addiction to watching Tom Hanks movies. Although, like he himself claims, "I've made over 20 movies, and 5 of them are good." :7
Ginny
09-17-2003, 03:39 AM
Lol, yeah I love Tom Hanks too (Youv'e got mail, sleepless in seattle) and also I'm reminded now of a pretty silly but funny movie, Jo vs. The Volcano. And yes, I'm addicted to Robin Williams. I also love Julia Roberts And Dustin Hopffman. Oh and Woody Alan, and Meg Ryan, and here's another movie I remembered:
First Wives Club: Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hon/Haun/Hawn (I never could spell this).
And Nicole Kidman is also a favorite. And-- *cutoff sounds*
Do you have the Hallmark channel? There are some pretty good movies there, that aren't very well known:
Alice in wonderland
Prince Charming (it's sort of altered version, and it's damn funny! With what's her name... And also with another what's her name who I also love, and brings me to another movie I almost forgot: )
Wag the Dog. Hilarious, Interesting, Dustin Hoffman, Kirstin Dunst in a small role I think, and such.. :9
Oh and from Disney I also love the sword in the stone.
Somebody stop me.
P.s. Now I gotta go do my Arabic homework. Or commit suicide. Somehow the latter is more appealing :P j/k.

I see great movies following these criteria:
A} They are rewatchable {say, twice a year}
B} You don't look at your watch during the movie {Or at least not till at least an hour and a half passes by}
C} You remember a lot of it.
I'll produce a list when I'm more aware of my surroundings.

When I look at my watch, during a movie, it's usually a sign that I'm enjoying the movie and hope that its time isn't running near.
I found myself looking at my watch during the Lord of the Rings when 1 hour was up, and I go "phew, still 2 hours to go" ;)

A complicated movie can do that to you sometimes too, because that means it explained well, whatever it was that was complicated. :P
But I guess you're right. The Usual Suspects was a good movie, but I still can't catch/understand a whole lot that the movie supposedly showed.

Fish Called Wanda
The Blues Brothers
Clockwork Orange
Amadeus
Dr. Strangelove...
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
American Beauty
Being John Malkovich
assorted Almodovar
8 1/2

LA Confidential
As far as Disney movies go (I see all y'all young'uns like to include them): Fox and the Hound. Great music to that one too...
etc.
I am probably forgetting something...

I'll just mention that Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail is the only movie thaT makes me laugh just as much every time I see it (every couple months), but I really couldn't list all movies I love because I would keep forgetting and adding, forgetting and adding.

What was complicated about Usual Suspects? I enjoyed it, but it wasn't exactly a mind-bender. I figured out the "twist" about halfway through (I tend to do such things a lot. See the Sanitarium thread, for example).

The thing is, I didn't figure out the twist ;)
There were apparently many parts in the movie where there are hints hinting that he's really not a cripple, like when he's using the lighter, or pointing the gun. Many of which I caught seeing it the second time around. At first, I didn't think it was important to notice which hand he was crippled in or any of the other sneaky stuff.

Boy that's true. I love movies....
Besides the reason I love certain movies is for the strangest reasons - it can come down to one scene. Here's a list of some...
Last Of The Mohicans (there's this one scene with no dialogue that just slays me)
Gladiator
Battle of Britain
All the Thin Man movies
Catch 22
Dr. Strangelove
The Unforgiven
Schindlers List
The Jerk
A Fish Called Wanda
The Big Hit
The Red Balloon
A Thousand Blows
Seven Samauri
The Usual Suspects
Ghost Dog

Dude that's one crazy question to answer.
Fight Club - retrospective and disturbing
Rocky - unaffectedly positive
Star Wars Trilogy - sci-fantasticly adventuresome
Groundhog Day - positive elan vital
Magnolia - positively introspective
The Unforgiven - hail to the Clint Eastwood, gruesome and unconventional
Taxi Driver - socially dissectional
Once Upon a Time in America - demythologizing classic
Casablanca - classy classic
Nightmare before Christmas - positively grim
...and many, many, maaaaa...ny MORE!

Blade Runner
All Johnny Depp movies, I've been a Deppmaniac for over 10 years now
A Wonderful Life
Frankenstein
One over cuckoo's nest
The original Star wars trilogy, yes the ORIGINAL, not the crappy edited cgi version.
Indiana Jones trilogy

-Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost
-Ghost in the Shell
-Spiritual Kung-Fu

-Shaolin Soccer

And.... dare I say it?
TOMB RAIDER! (prepares himself to get panned)
To make the list sort, here is one of my mottos:
"There is nothing better than a bad horror movie!"
And just put in nearly every Jackie Chan movie, Godzilla or Gamera movie in to the mix and you got my favourite movies list (With just a dash of anime, a sprig of sci-fi, and some comedy to taste)...
Well Phil25, here is a moment from a movie I love, the Army Of Darkness windmill scene! Its like something from a Tom & Jerry or Bugs Bunny cartoon, some may says its more "3 Stooges", but I can't tell because we dont have their movies in Spain...

I have never liked martial arts movies. A movie which only contents is about people kicking eachother sounds incredibly boring in my ears. But a cool fight is...well kind of a cool thing to watch. 8-) I really liked Brotherhood Of The Wolf (Le Pacte Des Loups) och The Musketeer was fun and those included some martial arts. The only 100% martial art movie I have enjoyed is Hero which had a good story to. I have a friend who is obsessed with Jackie Chan so I have seen many of his movies old as well as new and they have all sucked big time IMHO. ;)

A lot of the films that have already been mentioned and...
The Matrix 1 & 2 - yes, the second one too, the second half makes up for the slow start)
Southpark, bigger, longer & uncut - the ultimate parody of the US
Bowling for Columbine - the best documentary ever!
The Frighteners - hilarious and scary at the same time
As good as it gets - deliciously cynical
Ocean's Eleven - FUN
The Sixth Sense - SCARY, eventhough I knew the ending because a friend had told me. Still sort of felt surprising somehow...
Shrek - "Yeah! I'm a FLYIN' talking donkey!"
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - fantastic fighting scenes and great acting also
The Truman Show - brilliant satire
Les Visiteurs - one of the funniest films ever
Men in Black - "You don't like it, you can kiss my furry little BUTT!"
The Gods must be crazy 2 - great fun
The Fifth Element - strange, wild and generally a great film
Sunes sommar - FUNNY! (jag skrattade så hårt jag nästan dog...)
Back to the future trilogy - Doc
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - "No, god isn't with us, cause he hates idiots too."
Jurassic Park - ROAR!
I also really enjoyed Taxi, by Luc Besson... though it doesn't quite make it to my all-time favourites list. Also while I'm at it with non-english films, "Fucking åmal" is also an excellent film. Ooh, and has anyone ever seen No Man's Land?

Just saw Dancer in the Dark for the first time......... :\
Step aside, Blues Brothers.....
What?? Those two movies have absolutely nothing to do with each other. There are literally no planes on which they can be compared. I thought Dancer in the Dark was very good, but perhaps a bit too manipulative.
BTW, just to be clear, I don't actually think The Blues Brothers is THE best movie of all time, I just say that about everything I think is really cool ;) It's obviously quite far from the best movie ever, but it's certainly in my top 5 comedies, unquestionably.

Perhaps they compete as his favorite movie?
Dancer in the dark is the movie I've cried the most in... My head hurt for a long time afterwords because of the crying... Indeed one of my favorites.

And what about Tina, hmmmmm?!
I've managed to watch that film twice but I don't know if I ever will again.
I really feel like watching it again... I don't think I can watch it with people though, because I have problems with crying in front of people... So it would have to be a time when I would not be disturbed...
I might actually watch it again tonight...

So I take it that you all think that Dancer in the Dark was a good movie? :P
A girl in my class has been telling me to see it, but she's such a huge fan of Björk so I've always thought that could have clouded her judgment.

All right, I belive you.
Hmm, the test on your webpage? You mean she isn't one of those people who "keep insisting they're right when they're obviously not"? :P

:P is that a veiled hint? If so, *whack*
I cried at the ending of 'Dancer in the Dark'. I think that anyone who doesn't, isn't human.
that bit :P

Oh, you mean that bit. :D
Well I agree, as far as if you see a movie which you think is good and very sad then of course you cry. Everybody (of us humans that is) cries at that point.
I guess I now really must get myself to see "Dancer in the dark".

I had a hallucination where I saw a post by me where I said "Blues Brothers is teh best musicel EVAR," so I thought it was faitly obvious that people'd understand that it had just lost that title.
But MAN, Dancer in the Dark... I was weeping practically from the beginning, I don't think I've cried that much, and so openly EVER before.... My mother kindly provided me a hankie halfway through.

Ah, ok. Makes sense now. I guess I didn't make the connection because neither of those movies are really musicals, but they both contain musical-esque choreographed songs.

Nah, cmon now, the beginning wasn't really sad at all ... it was sort of upbeat and hopeful and quirky and beautiful. Once that guy steals the money, around the middle of the movie, I think that's when things start going awry. And the ending .. that ending is what transformed the whole movie from very good to a masterpiece. It traumatized me .......... :frown: :\ I still can't even listen to that track on the soundtrack, cos it stops at the same place ................ http://mommietalk.com/images/smilies/sobbing.gif http://mommietalk.com/images/smilies/wah.gif

Damnit, that scene and MOST OF ALL the part when she's crying and trying to get her money back and he's going "It's MY money! Mine! You're stealing it from me!" and calling his wife kick my ass.
Tamara
10-06-2003, 09:54 AM
don't you dare 'most of all' that scene! (though yeah, it was powerful .. )
the MOST OF ALL is quite evidently
the last scene, where she's hanged and is so hopeful and almost delusional till the last and the noose chokes off her last breath and up till then you kept hoping against hope she was going to be saved ... :\ But it's the song being broken off midway that did it for me .. no movie moment will ever top that. I almost fainted in the cinema.
However those scenes you mentioned did get too much for me after I'd watched the full movie .. I managed to rewatch up till the midway point, but then knowing what was going to happen was just too much and I had to switch it off .. I'm too sensitive for my own good sometimes :)

Dancer in the Dark is one of my all-time favourite movies in a very strange way, because being a huuuge Björk fan I bought it on DVD, but after watching it once (over a year ago now) I just haven't managed to watch it again. :\
That's when I decided that if people warn me that a movie I am going to see is "very sad", I just ask if it's "as sad, or even MORE sad than DITD". If the answer is "yes" I know I can never watch it. That's why I've simply avoided watching movies like Requiem For a Dream, which I've heard is quite extreme. Oh, do call me a chicken, I don't care. ;)
Tamara

Sadder than DITD?!? Is that even possible??? :\ I gotta try this Requiem for a Dream to find out, I guess ... but seriously .. that end bit .. nothing, ever can surpass it ..

Well, hwat got my tearducts going was her conversation with the policeman when they reveal their secrets...... the acting was so good that I was moved to tears BECASUE of it's hopefulness and beatuifulness....
I first thought she was saving the money to operate HERSELF... so when she tells him about her son....
:\
Of course, it was all downhill from there.....
And Requiem for a Dream isn't as sad, but it's terribly depressing nonetheless.....

I'm half Welsh myself, as my Dad is a cockney, and my Mum's nan is originally from Bath (though my mum was born in Wales).
Third Gen Welsh how, btw?
