I nominate Grim Fandango!

While GF is a great game, if a game is going to be greatest of all time, it should be flawless. GF controls are horrible, so I would have to go more for Day of the Tentacle. Great game, plot, puzzles. THAT is probably the greatest in my book.

Grim Fandango.

I really don't have a problem with the controls, and I played it with a keyboard. No other game inspires and evokes emotions in me. In Grim Fandango you are given no freedom. Instead you are given the best game script ever. You are given characters that will make you laugh and cry, and puzzles and locations that will astound and amaze. A classic, a perfect adventure.

Toss up between Monkey Island 2 and Grim Fandango for me. Though DOTT also comes close. And Broken Sword I. So many classics :~

I say nay to the idea of DOTT as best adventure. Within its scope, DOTT is flawless, but its scope isn't as far-reaching as other adventures. Its plot is more 'tie the unrelated comedy set-pieces together with time-travel' than an actual flowing storyline.

My vote goes for GK1, despite some flaws.

In my own book (which is a very small one, by the way), I'd have to say Monkey Island 1 and 2 and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

They represent all that I desire in a good adventure game: good graphics (yes, they have good graphics), good story, some comedy, and on the edge excitement-giving. :D

I haven't played so many of the other good games, though - no Grim Fandango, no Syberia, etc. :(

My favorite is Grim Fandango. I wasn't bothered by the controls mainly because I was too immersed into the story and atmosphere to notice any faults.

The first time I played I was bothered by the controls (not to mention the elevator patch I didn't know about.. GRR), and never enjoyed a bit of it. The second time, I was glad I played it a second time.

As obvious as it is, I say Grim Fandango. The game has everything. Great storyline, humor, puzzles and overall atmosphere. And LENGTH. Gotta love a beautifully crafted epic. I just hope it won't end up being LEC's very last adventure masterpiece (don't we all?).

We can only hope.

The real question is: when the world ends, will there be an exit interview? And we will have to use ink on the form?

Wow, I had no idea so many people would choose Grim! I played it on keyboard too, and there are simply too many great things about, both large and small, to try to list.

I do think that this thread is inappropriately named, as perfection is different for everyone, and thus there can be no adventure that is everyone's favorite. That'd be boring! Instead, this thread would work better as "What it is your perefect adventure game ever?" That being said, Grim Fandango is flawless in every aspect in my eyes, despite the keyboard controls. They don't make the game less good, they just make it different. I could go on about how great the story, puzzles, characters (each and every one is perfect), dialogs and voice acting are, aswell as music, sound effects and :9~ cutscenes, but some of the best things are just the tiny little details you may not notice until you've played it several times. Why do I say that perfection is relative then? Even if a game with the exact perfection of Grim, in every aspect, but with everything enchanced, I would still love Grim more.

You all say you played it with keyboard...of course you did, there's no other way to play it. (Or is there joystick support...*shudder* I can't imagine what that would be like) Anyways, I agree about the comments on DOTT, so I would have to go with any of the GK games (been so long since I played one, I forgot all about them :pan: )

Grim Fandago for me too. I was so totally immersed in it's world, I remember I almost cried when finishing the game. ;(

Seriously, I can't remember any game that immersed me more.

DOTT is second runner up because it was so complex and original at the time.

For me it's a toss up between The Last Express (though a small number of other adventures come very close seconds and I'd probably change my mind tomorrow :D).

TLE is a master piece; with a large winding and engaging plot, innovative game play and amazing production values. When it was made it was the most expensive game ever made, in all genres ($15million I think was the figure). There are few games that manage to come close to the feeling of immersion achieved in TLE. And it has an astounding replay value.

(Can't remember if I posted in this thread before :))

The Last Express is clearly the best adventure game ever. It has it all plus that extra bits to make it a true classic.

I'm not going to pick a favorite, for the moment, 'cause I haven't played millions of adventures (including the GKs) yet. The favorite I've played is probably TLE, but don't make much of that. (I think it was $5-6, not $15. Shenmue, which came out later, was $75, though. :P)

I had this link to the demo (http://www.msu.edu/user/vandrag2/games.html) lying around. Does it work?

I found a lot of links but all were broken. All the download sites seem to delete their old demos. As I already mentioned even the official TLE site stopped hosting the demo file.

However during my search I found nice page with some old adventure games demos but with no TLE however - feel free to enjoy it:

On top of all, Secret of Monkey Island on pc and amiga.

Grim was great, the controls was it's only flaw, over 90/100 points game still very clearly.

The background graphics are still breathtaking in Grim.

Even I'm eager to agree that controls in Grim Fandango aren't flawless. But it is rather a matter of bugs. The general idea behind Grim Fandango's controls however is simply brilliant. The workmanship even though the bugs is still impressive and remains intuitive.

Hehe I originally had 2 games but I decided I couldn't be arsed. Oops... (ok 4 games)

And thanks for the links Twifak; I've got the demo already (btw it plays slightly differently to the game I think; just the order) but the trailer; behind the scenes bit etc are great!

Btw something I forgot to mention, the music in TLE is superb (thouggh used fairly sparingly if I recall correctlt); especially the music over the end credits.

You guys are welcome... to kiss my ass!

Also, thank archive.org. Yay1

Yes, TLE music was cool. The original score was written by this guy (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006012/), while the (not original) concert music was by César Franck. The soundtrack is available somewhere, but doesn't contain the concert piece (which I found eventually on amazon, after some poking and prodding).

I cast my vote alongside Dom, ragnar and Twif! The Last Express it is! GF is pretty good, but stinky controls ding it. Plus, I was more immersed in the constant overwhelming intensity of TLE than the more laid-back humor of Grim... I have a preference for thriller plots in adventure games even above humor, though...

My all time favorite is The Longest Journey; I love the characters, and the story totally engrossed me the first time I played it. I love Grim Fandango--I even like the keyboard controls--but no story in a game has captured me the way TLJ did. I was upset when it was over.

Not going to cover any new ground with this post, I can see. Grim Fandango. The first thing I always think about after the last cut scene of any adventure game has played is whether or not I'd enjoy watching it as a movie. That's why I almost always play through the good ones again. I know the solutions to the puzzles. I know where to go to make the story flow well. It's like watching a movie the second time around. I really dig that. I always thought that would be a great "feature" to add to an adventure game. In the end you should have the opportunity to rewind the entire game and watch it through as a movie. That would completely rock. Most "real" adventure game fans will probably flame to bits for suiggesting such a thing but I think it'd be great. I guess I've gotten off the point here slightly. No other game has given me the feeling of being involved in a really good movie the way Grim Fandango did. For that reason alone it is my favorite all time game. All of the rest of it's qualities are icing. God, I love that game.

I'm going to do something a little different here and just post my top 5 list of what I perseave as a greatest adventure games.

1: Grim Fandango (I had absolutly no problem with the controls, though being of by an inch of a door, sent you running left or right a mile, you got used to it. Incredibly fluid story and moody)

2: Zork: Nemesis (I hate Myst and it's many clones, however Zork: N (and Zork: Grand Inquisitor as well) are the exception. Wonderfuly buitiful, with a griping story, a fantastic mystery, a twist ending, soild puzzles, basicly everything that a top adventure game needs)

3: Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge (Quite possibly the greatest Adventure game ever if it wasn't for a few Puzzles that made no real sense. I personaly loved the ending)

4: Full Throttle (It's short and the Bike Combat will give you fits of frustration, but other then those Full Throttle is near perfect Adventure Game.)

5: Discworld Noir (Incedibly detailed story and setting wise, drawing on all kinds of Discoworld lore. Not only incoperation the Noir Genre but also the discworld equivilant of the Lovecraft Mythos. Some of the puzzles were increadibly difficult because of the Notepad interface, and Inventory bugs were abound. But story wise it's one of the best.)

Given the games industry is relatively new, I'm such a thing will soon come up. Afterall, it took movies also some 10-15 years to get the Academy Award going, didn't it?

Well I think I'll take a leaf out of The Adventurer's book and list my top 5 (in no particular order).

Monkey Island 1 - because it's the first adventure game I ever played. I still play it now and still love it.

The Longest Journey - I just finished playing this game yesterday so I don't know whether it actually qualifies as one of my fave games because it's still fresh in my mind but right now I still love it.

Simon the Sorcerer - yeah I know it's not one of the best games out there but it's another one of those games that brings back memories from my childhood and it makes me laugh every time I play it.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - all I can say about this one is that it was fantastic, I loved the puzzles and thes storyline and it was great that there was a new Indiana Jones story besides the three movies (btw I'm not including all those Young Indiana tv shows with that).

Monkey Island 2 - Just as good as the first one. Largo was a nasty piece of work but his themetune is great. The ending was a bit confusing I know, didn't like the whole 'I'm really a kid' thing but that problem was solved in CMI.

Simon the Sorcerer 2 - Call me a sequel lover if you like, I'm really not. Some sequels really do suck but I liked this one because for one thing it re-visits one of my fave games and for another thing there's a lot of imagination in it. I always love the sort of games, tv shows and movies that take exisiting fables, fairytales and stories and make new stories from them or re-invent them.

Anyway I know my list might seem a bit rubbish compared to other peoples choices but I haven't played Grim Fandango or Day of the Tentacle so I can't vote for those but I'm sure they are great games if so many people are voting for them. I'll have to see if I can get a copy of GF but I can't say the same for Day of the Tentacle.

The AIAS Awards are nice, but aren't the E3 awards for games that aren't even completed yet? Seems kind of silly to me.

hehe thats top 6 :)

try Gabriel Knight 3 or Broken Sword 1 for something different if you haven't already btw
Oopsie, didn't realise I'd put 6 instead of 5. Boy is my face red. I've played Broken Sword 2 but it was on rental so I only had it for a few days. I liked it but, as with so many things, I could never find a copy after that.

How can it be that I've never heard of Gabriel Knight 3? Sheesh I've been out of the adventure gaming world for waaay too long!

Oh btw, has anyone played Syberia, I only heard of it recently and was wondering whether it was any good?

OK, I have now finally played The Last Express demo. I must say I like the style - very original. :) I only died about 10 times in that fight scene before I figured out what I was supposed to do (how many of you also clicked just about every part of the screen to see where the gun was? )

Oh well, maybe in another 5 years I'll either have found it in English on ebay or else I'll have finally learned German and purchased one of the many that are on offer at ebay.de

I will have to be incredably original and say Grim Fandango.

So here is my list of Best Adventure Games No One Is Mentioning:

1. Sam and Max Hit the Road: This honestly baffles me. If Grim Fandango had a hot sister you wanted to be set up with, it would be S&M. The art is just as impressive, the humor is just as funny, the puzzles are even more bizarre and twisted, but in a good way. And it has a more traditional control scheme for those who couldn't wrap the GF one around their heads for some unknown reason.
2. Space Quest 2: Evil salesmen clones, shrinking machines, and a puzzle that involves ordering a mating whistle by mail. Classic.
3. King's Quest 4: This is one of those games I haven't touched in years, but as I remember, it was the peak of one of the most definitive adventure game series.
4. Police Quest 1: Yes, this series went into the FPS crapper, but the first couple were nothing but tasty.
5. Gold Rush: A personal favorate. At a time when Sierra adventures were pretty formulaic, Gold Rush went in some different directions and
I thought it was great. It was like smashing Oregan Trail and Kinq's Quest together in a delicious smoothie.

2. Space Quest 2:
Space Quest 3.

Putting ladders in your pants, the Two Guys from Andromeda, and a puzzle that involves an Orat on a Stick.
Classic.

Well I'll go for Pandora Directive. Besides the fact that I love detective stories and noir settings alltogether, this games has everything I ask for: a great "wanna be this guy" hero who can make complete fool of himself and save the day at the same time, an intruiging, deep story, an amazingly handy interface for a 1st person game and finally an astonishing balance between detective/thriller atmosphere and humorous dialogous. A true diamond.

I have to admit, however, that I also love Grim Fandango and DOTT or even the 1st Gabriel Knight for that matter. Pandora is my all-time favourite though. Hope they finally manage to pull-off that Overseer sequel though I' afraid that even if they do we will have to deal with a 3D modelled Tex Murphy.. Well I guess it will have to do..

Greatest adventure game ever, eh?

I always have had a soft spot for the first GK game: Gabriel Knight-- Sins of the Fathers. The wonderful variety of music, the exquisite detail of the faces when you decided to interrogate someone, and the maturity of the story all led to an unforgettable gaming experience. I was only 13 or so when I beat it, so there probably was a lot I didn't understand about the plot at the time, but I remember being so impressed at how the characters were portrayed... This weren't the usual "idealistic hero searching for the three gems to save the world"
hero-- they felt like real people.

I was so impressed by Gabriel Knight in the game that I worked for a few weeks on trying to imitate tim Curry's Southern drawl..

3. Indy FOA - Excellent story, characters, puzzles...

Risingson
01-30-2005, 06:39 AM
Well, yes, but in Tony Tough you didn't have to walk that much at least.

There's something about AdventureSoft games that I really don't like. Maybe the excessive distance between open scenaries, maybe the excessive length of dialogues which don't add information or fun factor, maybe that the main character is someone you can't like.

The problem with the puzzles in Simon1 is that there seems to be no connection at all between the objects you need to combine and what you need to accomplish. Plus that what you need to accomplish is also most of the time rather dim. That the game tries too hard to be funny and doesn't add to the quality of the game.

I'll list 3 games that are the "greatest"! The tie is beween

Myst - OK, don't everyone come and yell at me. Anticlimatic ending and all, I really love this game. It's the immersive environments that do it for me.

and

Grim Fandango - what more can be said. I found the controls a little tricky (next time I'll use a gamepad) and it crashed on me sometimes. For all that, it's a brilliant, brilliant game. It's still a tragedy that Grim Fandango never had huge sales. Gee, wonder why Tim Schafer doesn't want to do "pure" adventure games anymore!

The third game is Obsidian - there's something about this game.

Baffling. Absolutely baffling.

By the way, we're all a bunch of fanatics. But I suppose that's what keeps us dedicated to this genre.

Anyone want to guess what my selection for magnum opus is? You don't have to think hard, just about 90% of everyone else has suggested it as well, except those who didn't enjoy the interface.

Grim Fandango is my favorite adventure game, not for control scheme or puzzle design, but because it had perhaps the most engrossive story and atmosphere I have seen in the genre yet. I have gone through the game at least five times, and the presentation, even at its now dated appearance, never fails to draw me in. It's an experiance I'll take to my grave, and it's what I love about adventure gaming. I feel that Grim Fandango represents the genre at its peak, because it showcases the one thing that other genres have a difficult time portraying: Methodical story telling, and convincing, witty scripting. The game is well rounded, and while it isn't perfect, it comes close enough to make the flaws tolerable.

If you disagree, you're entitled too. There were more than a couple other posts that I didn't agree with. I couldn't stand Myst or Syberia, and that's enough to get you shot in this kneck of the woods.

I want involvement. Syberia and Myst had atmosphere, but the actual interaction felt so alien and distant. I want to sympathize with the protagonist rather than explore and unravel curious surroundings. Grim Fandango was a fairly leniar game, but it needed to be to tell its story.

WOW!!! A lot of support for Grim there. I actually can't call Grim the best yet (I only just secured a copy of it). My opinion?

Tie= Broken Sword 2, Curse of Monkey Island.

I know that a lot of you will be all like "BS2?!? That's just BS!", but I think I can explain.

For a good few years ('93-'97) I didn't really have access to computer games. It was only in late 1997 that my dad brought BS2 home and installed it. Right away I was taken by the fact the installation take over 200MB. Then, when the first cutscene rolled and I realized that I didn't quite understand why it felt like I was entering into a series I started loving it. I actually didn't know that this game was a sequel.

I don't quite remember the circumstances of the time, but I do remember not being able to have access to the internet so I was walkthrough-free*. I was also amazed by the graphics (the closest I had seen before was MI1&2 and DOTT but I didn't quite remember those). And I just loved the story so much. I couldn't get enough. It was like I was reading an Indy novel. The only drawback I ever found was what later turned out to be a bug near the end that caused me toplay most of the second half again. *This got me agitated enough to track down a walkthrough through a friend.

MI3 was the second game my dad brought home. I loved it just as much. The only thing that stopped me from loving it more has always been the entire ending sequence in the circus. And can you believe that by then I had forgotten all about MI1&2 so I didn't realize this was a sequel either.

Please bare in mind as well that I have never been able to track down a copy of BS1. Judging from reviews and opinions it is quite a bit better than BS2, so I would probably love it even more than any game ever.

(Actually, I was hoping you guys would get a life for me...)

I nominate Star Trek: Judgment Rites because it is simply the game out of which I got the most fun and replay value. Grim Fandango has nothing on ST:JR's sense of freedom and heart.

I never played any of the numerous Star Trek PC games, personally.

Possibly because I never actually got to see much in the way of Star Trek itself. Eheh.

For me, a game that qualifies for 'Bestest thing ever' is one that makes me laugh. Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist, Starship Titanic, Zork Grand Inquisitor, and Space Quest Six certainly won't win any awards for best design from me, but the fact alone that they can get me to crack a grin is suffient reason to play them over and over.

Maybe I've already posted here, but...
To me, the greatest AG of all time is Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
It has it all: great graphics, witty dialogs, heaps of puzzles (most of which are inventive and clever), humour, adventure, some well-done (and easy) action scenes, nice music, three paths, and a bitchy yet seductive sidekick.

Apart from the two adventure games from Interplay (the first was Star Trek: 25th Anniversary), there are very few ST games likely to interest an adventure gamer (The Next Generation: A Final Unity and Deep Space Nine: Harbinger are AGs, but nowhere near as good as those from Interplay).

My second choice for greatest adventure game of all time would be Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. It strikes me as the most successful Gesamtkunstwerk in our beloved genre so far. :P

Other candidates would be Gabriel Knight 1, Broken Sword 1, Gabriel Knight 3, the two Laura Bows, the first Sherlock Holmes from Electronic Arts... There is actually very little to choose between all these favoured titles of mine. Each deserves to be played and played.

Best game ever is Broken Sword 1, hands down. Story, voice, music, graphics. I felt as if I was in the game while playing.

As far as I'm concerned, I vote for MI1&2, with S&M2 ( sorry,S&M1 :) ) and day of the tentacle just behind. Grim Fandango is a great game, but one the first to use 3D, with flawless, like awful HUD interfaces and moves.
I played recently a strange ( the strangest I played since Eternam ) but excellent game, despite the realisation and poor graphics ( 256 colours - or 16?- ), Sanitarium. He deserves a good place in votes:)

In terms of old, I liked KGB & Lost Eden, both by Cryo. Seems kind of opposite, KGB was painfully hard and Lost Eden was ever so easy. The reason I liked KGB was because of the sense of urgency, and the portrayal of locations in Russia (also the music fit the mood well too, creating a sort of depressing mood). Also, while hard, when you finally got it right the sense of accomplishment was very fulfilling. Lost Eden I liked because of the cool story idea and the visuals. Although it's really more of a storybook than a game, it was a really good one. The music was great and I even bought the soundtrack (incidentally, the music for both these games were by Stephane Picq - does that show his versatility or what?).

In terms of Semi-old, I liked Amerzone because it succeeded in Immersing me in it's large world, and the atmosphere was great, though some people call it a Myst Clone. I also liked Syberia for obvious reasons and Myst IV.

Oh yeah, Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis was pretty fun too.

KGB is an excellent game indeed, in the incredibly tough category. I'd say it's the best investigating AG ever.
But Lost Eden... which version did you play? I played the french version, and the stupid voices, actrociously repetitive puzzles, and abrupt ending more than spoiled the game for me.

I played the English version, and the English voices were quite fitting, especially that of the Pterodactyl. I'd say I actually liked the world and story progression moreso than the actual game, I agree it was repetitive. But I really liked the story and how it unfolded (littered as it was though with errors about dinosaurs - some research would've helped), finding the tribes, the uncovering of your history, finding the Aquasaurus, etc. Liked the overall mood. Have to say , though, 20% of my enjoyment was from the music and the way it was used in the game.

Great seven!

1. Grim Fandango - This is one epic adventure, best adventure ever to me.
+ Great storyline, atmosphere, characters, length, 2D graphics, gameplay
- Those damn keyboard controls!
Score: 98%

2. The Secret of Monkey Island - Classic! This game must be the best p&c adventure ever produced.
+ Humour, main character, insult fighting, Carribean atmosphere.
- They should have put more locations...
Score: 97%

3. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge - This game has shown that even the great original can have equally great sequel.
+ Humour, storyline, many locations, good old MI1 recipe.
- Confusing ending, lack of "the" island.
Score: 95%

4. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars - Maybe not strictly humorous, but BS just makes you play it more to reveal every single secret.
+ Fantastic storyline, Templars, main character, graphics.
- Sometimes lacks true gameplay, you can die in many places.
Score: 93%

5. The Longest Journey - produced after the "classic age" it showed that good adventures aren't dead.
+ Best storyline in AG's ever, 2D graphics, two huge worlds.
- 3D graphics, awful ending.
Score: 92%

6. Day of the Tentacle - I really LMAO on this adventure... Those who played it know what I mean.
+ Sick humour, characters, picasso-style graphics, lots of tentacles
- too short, sometimes too illogical.
Score 92%

7. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - definetly best IJ game, better than Last Crusade.
+ Atlantis, locations, secrets, Nazis!
- Fistfights, why the hell do they give you points at the end?!
Score: 91%

In last three places I would put:
8. Beneath a Steel Sky
9. The Curse of Monkey Island
10. Flight of the Amazon Queen.

But I haven't played Full Throttle and Sam & Max yet, so I can't decide.
Considering Sierra's adventures.. I hate them, all of them.

This is going to be really hard but

Kings Quest V: Absence Makes The Heart Go Yonder This was probably the first adventure game I got really hooked to. The voice acting was great, graphics were wonderful and every moment made me want to keep playing the game. One of my all time favorites

Loom One of my favorite lucas arts game. Another game that got me really into adventure games when it first came out. I had the cd version and the story was wonderful, loved the music and graphics were great. Again every moment sucked me in. One of the more serious lucas arts games.

Monkey Island I bought this after Loom I think, it was great to play as a pirate and graphics were superb, loved how you could choose what to say. Very interactive game

Space Quest 4 Technically the only space quest game I have played besides V which I way after it was abandonware. The graphics weren't as great but the backgrounds were pretty decent. The storyline of the future was awsome since I was a big fan of movies taking place in the future etc. I didn't play this game until much later because I was a small kid and got spooked by the cyborg which made me avoid the game for some time.

Ecoquest This probably won't be on most peoples list but since I was a kid I would say this was a wonderful game to play (especially the voice version) to learn about the environment. The game was fun and you learned quite a bit. It made understanding easy.

Those are my top 5 games. I left others out that I have played, doesn't mean they were bad they just didn't leave as much impression to me as these games did.

Tch. There's nothing wrong with older games. Graphics are not important. The gamplay is perfectly fine. A great game, just like a great book, or film, or piece of music, will always be great.

My choice for the best adventure game yet released is Sam and Max Hit the Road. Great comedy, superb voice acting, well conceived and interesting puzzles, good graphic design, plus a few mini-games thrown in to provide a break from the storyline. I'm fond of Car Bomb, myself.

Plus, one thing that is a big appeal to me is the Lucasarts safety net. Yuo can't die, or do anything that will render the game unwinnable. I apprecaite having that, because it gives the freedom to experiment and try unusual things without constant saving and restoring.

Are we talking about the same Grim Fandango here? I'm currently playing the game and based on what I've seen this far it is definately NOT the best adventure game ever! Just finished the Rubacawa part in year two and the whole thing was a huge pointless puzzle-marathon with endless amount of running around in the same places, nothing to hear but "It's locked", "Not picking that up" and my all time favorite: "I don't really want to do that" Go for it Manny! I'm not saying the game's horrible, and since I'm not even near the finish line, I may not be the best person to say. Indeed, I would be most delighted if the game got better after this, maybe then I'd understand what it is that makes it the BEST of the best.

For me, having only played few adventure games (GK3, Syberia, Broken Sword 1, Monkey Island 1 and some that I haven't completed yet) it is hard to declare the greatest of all time, but so far all that I've played have been almost equally good. Syberia and GK3 a little bit better than the others.

Syberia and GK3 a little bit better than the others.

Rubacava is widely considered to be the best part of the game, so if you don't like it now, you probably never will.
Also, I find it kind of strange that you give Grim such a hard time for its constantly repeated lines, yet you say Syberia is one of your favorite games, with it's constant "No need to go that way" line, bit of a contradiction don't you think?

Iron

Rubacawa the best part of the game? Maybe I'm not such an adventure gamer after all...

Well I admit, Syberia can be irritating in the similar way, but the atmosphere, story and the overall style of the game reduce the level of irritation, which doesn't happen to me in Grim Fandango. Anyway, it's worth to play even with the things I dislike. Just isn't the masterpiece in my opinion.

These threads seem rather pointless to me. Firstly, no one will ever agree on a winner. Secondly, it's difficult to pin-point a "best-ever" adventure game, or a "best-ever" of any genre. At any rate, if I did bother to sit down and contemplate the subject, my choice would be dependant on my mood, rather than any concrete belief that game X was better than game Y.

I think these threads only become pointless when people start to argue.

I can't believe you picked that. That sucks!

It's all a matter of taste. I like seeing what other people think, as long as they're civil about it.

As for me, I haven't read the entire thread, but I'd be willing to bet I'm the first person who's going to say Police Quest 2. Crawling around the sewers with Jesse Baines at game's end is one of the most intense moments I've ever experienced playing an adventure.

I think, when people mean 'perfect', it means a game which fits the best in all criteria, so is not to be mixed up with 'favourite'.

My fav is Discworld Noir, but it's not the perfect. I'd nominate 'Grim Fandango' because:

-the graphics look great even now and have a unique sense of character both on the level design and characters (unlike other games like The Longest Journey, The Moment of Silence where characters and sets are cliched and have nothing to distinguish between 10 other games)

-has a remarkable story about travelling over a long period of time (that's adventure!). One that, whilst parodies other stories, doesn't become cliched or rip off of others (like Keepsake or TLJ).

-perfect script which is funny but doesn't resort to adult, and comedy that's suitable for any age and gender,

-music that fits the mood at all times.

-attempted a new control style and, at least for me(with a game pad) found it easy to use - and didn't just conform to what was the norm to other AGs at the time

-didn't make a sequel 1-2 years later for the hell of making as much money using the name of the 1st.

Im sure there are other reasons too,

Someone earlier asked why all of these old games were being chosen. I was wondering why so many of the old games were not chosen (Didn't Grim Fandango miss the heyday of adventure gaming?)

No graphics, restarting frequently. However, something just works. It is the game that I have enjoyed more than any other. Graphics are a novelty. Once you get past the 'Ohh, that looks nice' they don't interest me at all. Good puzzles and an entertaining ride is what I look for, and HHGTTG has that in large quantities.

Not forgetting Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman, hired by Gilbert, greatly involved in dott, samnmax and so on...Things are looking up in the adventure world, with the release of Sam and Max 2, Psychonauts etc, roll on good times!

Yea that was a good underdog and it could stand your votes over at my top ten list, but my number one goes to TEX MURPHY UNDER A KILLING MOON.

HI :)

I agree that Grim Fandango is a very good as well as innovative & creative
adventure game. So Grim Fandango is the best adventure game ever -
for me.

Riven. It's quite possibly the best game of all-time.

For me, Monkey Island 2, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango are all pretty much perfect in their own way. I don't think I could honestly make a case that one is superior to the others in any tangible way. They all had extremely interesting (and funny) puzzles, great stories, unforgettable characters, and good graphics.

The most important thing to me is that the puzzles were actually puzzles. Its a bit off topic, but I will never understand the appeal of Broken Sword 1. The "puzzles" were pretty much just talking to everyone around as much as possible. If I wanted to play a converstion simulator I would leave my apartment...

I started playing AG's with BlackMirrir,so I never could play old games 'cos of graphics. But I can totaly understand why you guys like them so,it is like me with BlackMirror,I can't forget the feelings it gave me,the dark atmosphere and the mistery.

So I have to say BLACK MIRROR

I'd have to say Riven (even though I enjoyed Revelation more), but if the end part of Revelation had been better I would've chosen Revelation instead.

My favorite is The Longest Journey. Never have I been more immersed in a game than this one. Some complained about the length of character speak but I loved every second of it. The only complaint I have about it was that there was a couple of ridiculous inventory puzzles but I really have NO other complaints.
