View Full Version : So, now what do I play?

I was given a gift card to EB games, and I'm at a lost as to what to buy. My adventure gaming resume is pretty small, really. All of the Myst games, 7th Guest, Challahan's and The Dig. I do better with point and click than 3dFPS, I like things that make my brain go hmmmmmm (Riven irritated me, Revelation wasn't too mind bending. That stupid cage puzzle in Dig sucked.), not to fond of gore and guts, and I want good story.
I also really need someting that will save whenever I need to stop. Things that you have to get to a specific point, or lose what you've done so far are not only annoying, they're utterly impractical for me.
Reccomendations from the masses?

I would suggest buying "The Longest Journey" and "Syberia". If you have enough $ left over, then buy Syberia II if you like the 1st one.
I was just going to recommend the same as Cassie. The Longest Journey is a must have.
By the way, welcome to the forums, Cassie. :)

Any adventure by LucasArts is probably a safe bet, though The Dig isn't really indicative of their standard output, which tends to be more humerous and involve more characters...

Yeah, Maggie's definitely not as bony as Meche. :D
OK, that was bad. :shifty:

TLJ (especially in anticipation of its sequel, Dreamfall (http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,500)), Grim Fandango, any of the Monkey Island games, the Broken Sword games (1&2 especially, third is direct control fully 3D, fourth is coming soon-ish), Syberia 1&2, and in that order ;) If you're into older P'n'C games then Sam and Max (also in anticipation of its sequel) and Full Throttle are definate must-plays. Have fun!
The best part is, you can purchase ALL of these titles for under 100$

Would EB have all of these older games though? lol
I mean, he'd have to going to a very big EB if they have games going back to the early 90s.
Grim Fandango!
Grim Fandango is one of the best games ever made.
Monkey Island 1-4, Day of the Tentacle and Simon the Sorcerer 1-2 (not Simon 3D) are also brilliant. I haven't played the Broken Swords in ages, but they are great.
I do not recommend Sam & Max. I found it boring and unfunny.

Besides TLJ and Syberia, and not in all of them, I haven't seen any of the games listed here at an EB store in a very long time. Perhaps it's just the stores in the Miami and Orlando area, but from personal experience I would say it'll take some luck to find all these games in an EB.
I'd suggest going over to a couple of EB's and taking down the names of the games you find interesting then looking them up on the Internet to see what people say about them, but based on the games you've mentioned, it sounds like Keepsake might be to your liking. Salammbo: Battle for Carthage might also interest you, so don't let the title mislead you, it's an Adventure game. Other games that come to mind are the Cameron Files games, Return to Mysterious Island and Voyage.
Many of the games people are suggesting (like the LucasArts titles) are older, and you're not going to find them at EB. Keepsake hasn't been released yet (and won't until April).
Just thinking about the recent games I've seen there, Voyage was a lot of fun, and I also liked And Then There Were None. And Still Life. :) The Longest Journey and Syberia should still be easy to find, if you're interested in those.
If you check AG's reviews page (http://www.adventuregamers.com/reviews.php) and sort by release date, you'll be able to see which games came out more recently (and are more likely to be at EB ;)).

You can't use a gift-card to pre-order?

I think definitely The Longest Journey or Gabriel Knight Beast within followed by Syberia 1 and 2. That's my recommendation in that order.

I don't believe so.
And good luck finding even Syberia or TMOS in stores anymore. Only recent games I've seen at most stores have been Voyage, And Then There Were None, and Myst V.

I've seen both Syberias in budget jewel cases ($9.99) at WalMart and CompUSA - it's not EB Games but they are still there. I got my TMOS at GameSpot not 2 and a half months ago so they may still have it there.

I've used gift cards/store credit to pre-order games at EB Games. No problem with that at all. Pre-ordering is usually just $5, and they don't usually care where the money comes from.

this gives me some good ideas. I know I saw Niribu (sp?!), but I wasn't sure about grabbing it.

I haven't played it, but the consensus based on what I've read is that NiBiRu is a little slow on pace, has few puzzles and poor voice acting, but is overall a solid adventure game.
Several websites have praised the story, or at least concurred that it's good. It's a little wordier than the games you've mentioned playing, but you might like it.

I believe you would enjoy Gabriel Knight 3. It runs great on Windows XP, it's a budget title, that is relatively easy to find, still looks decent and it is an almost standard point and click affair. Most importantly Gabriel 3 includes the best riddle/puzzle ever (at least the second after the infamous Babel fish). The decyphering of the "Serpent Rouge" (sp?)...
Read the review (http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,34) and see how you like it...

^ Where can you find Gabriel Knight? I've never played or seen any of the games in any store. It's quite old so I wouldn't expect to see it any longer.

In Greece (where I seem to live) I've seen more than few budget versions of Gabriel Knight 3... Some of them are the original box (full with manual, comic book etc) but budget priced... In the US I don't know, but I guess it's not such an obscure game.... Have you checked the Vivendi on line store? Googled it? Froogle perhaps? Ebay? It really shouldnt be that difficult to find...
