View Full Version : KGB (aka Conspiracy) - Have you played it?

I stumbled upon this game by accident and will try it out as soon as I have free time. I don't know if this game has been discussed before, but unless if my memory failed me, I think it has been reviewed by AG before. I tried looking for a review of this game on this website, but I can't find it.

Who has played it before? What are your comments? I played it for a good five minutes just for a sneak peek - not bad, for a game that's like over ten years old (it was released in 1991). It captured the feel of Moscow quite well, if I do say so myself, despite the old graphics.

That was the first pc game that I ever bought. One of the last floppy games that a local supermarket sold. I don't have the game anymore, I sold it years ago.

The interface was a little weird, but I liked the game. It might be a bit difficult?

It's actually from 1994 if it has Conspiracy rather than KGB written on the box (added FMV sequences with Donald Sutherland being the only difference between the two that I'm aware of). And it was made by Cryo, long before that name became synonymous with "boredom". They made Dune, which I really liked, about the same time, too.

Please let us know if you enjoy it. I keep stumbling upon "Sold Out" rerelease here but never actually got around to buying it. :D

Are the FMV sequences of the same quality as in Dune (i.e. 75% black, 25% video)?

In case it was directed at me: I didn't word it too well (as usual, I guess ;) ), but I actually haven't played Conspiracy (or KGB, for that matter), myself. :D

Well, it was directed at whoever might know. :) It's just that your post reminded me that I have to sit two meters away from the screen everytime I'm replaying Dune to be able to distinguish what the videos are showing --- and I was wondering if it was the same with Conspiracy (which I have no real intention to play, BTW).

Yes. But the videos are of no consequence. They don't detract from the experience, but they don't add anything either.

It's a great game. Great atmosphere. It starts out all gritty and realistic and at some point gets really bizarre :P

I remember it was really difficult (but it was one of the first adventures i ever played). Donals Sutherland kept saying "confidence Max, You are a Rukov" (or something like that) when I kept dying in one of the many timed sequences. But it is a great adventure.

Oh this game is 100% fantastic. Hard, yes, but it fills my belly with lots of Russian goodness. Oh man. I am going to go and play it right now.

Not that I remember. But of course, I may have just played the non-FMV version.

In any case, KGB is a great, but extremely unforgiving game. It's sheer complexity is both fascinating and frustrating... and I loved it.

I didn't like it that much, but then again, I played Spycraft before this game... :P

Oh man, I just tried playing and as soon as I got to Chapter 3 the screen goes all funny and just freezes on me. I was having so much fun, too. :(

You're missing something, here... As flawed as it migt be, it's still a unique game.

I started playing the disc version years ago, and, well, it just didn't work for me. If I had half a dozen lifetimes ahead of me, I'd consider giving it another try, but as it's not the case...

Can't say it actually caught the feel of Moscow or Russia, but it was a nice game nevertheless :) There were plenty of stereotipes, but than again, there was a reason for it. It is still better than, say, Big Red Adventure.. Well, one of the best games Cryo produced - that's for sure.

Heee! Lucky thing this Thursday is a public holiday in Russia, and Friday and Saturdays are off days. Hopefully I can finally play it... at least for a few hours.

Yeah, it's pretty tough. You'll find out later if you did something wrong earlier. Don't be too proud to check a walk-through if you can't figure it out.

That's a good question. It makes me wonder why I never looked into a walkthrough...

It's pretty hard, but it really is progressive, so no need to panick. When it gets too tough, just cheat. ;) Or not, if you're clever than me.

There's not that many good AGs out there, is there?
Man, I wish there were good AGs left to play for me... (well, there probably are, but not that many of them)

:D Heh. I visited a store today to check out whether the publisher has managed to release And Then There Were None by the (second) announced release date. He didn't, so I ended up buying the store's last copy of Conspiracy (with a price thrice reduced, too). I blame this thread.

Next community playthrough candidate, perchance? ;)

I need to get it working first. My copy keeps hanging when the great Sutherland makes his first appearance :shifty:.

Given the fact that even short and plain games like BASS can give birth to huge posts and lengthy discussions, I don't even want to think about what would happen with such a game.
I mean, even knowing who' who is tough, what with all the Vladimir Borogonov, Ivan Petrogionov, etc...

What little I've played of this, and what I've read here is intriguing. Anyone know if it's available anywhere other than Ebay/second-hand? I don't remember ever seeing it sold in Australia.

I got the old Sold Out edition for 10p plus P&P from amazon.co.uk. Not bad.

Though it's still hanging on Mr Sutherland, and I'm running out of ideas :frown:... Sometimes, seemingly at random, I manage to skip the cutscene and reach the game, but I've yet to guarantee it :frown:.

I really like the atmospher in the game. Remind me of Martin Cruz Smith's books about Arkadij Renko. It's both fun and somewhat disturbing to talk with the characters. I also enjoy the "techno-music" in the game. Too bad the game is so difficult and the "real time"-problem. If you haven't talked with the right person at the right moment you are probably stuck in the game and will be sent to Siberia.

Played and fhinished it without a walktrough. It took me about 3 months!
Defenetly, one of the hardest adventure games ever made, but one of the best too.
