IMHO, the best in the series :P

I really like the cartoon style of the 3rd MI. Felt like playing in an animated cartoon...

I must've played that one atleast six times :P Perhaps it's not the best one in the series, but it's certainly the most attractive one.

Just replayed it, myself. My favourite in the series.

This game makes me think of Runaway in a lot of ways, except with a much better environment and better puzzles. Many people really slam runaway but I think it was actually a desperate attempt to make a game like Monkey 3 and use some classic puzzle styles, although some of them weren't thought out well.

Ron Gilbert is a god. wish he'd come back and do more.

Wreck, do you think there would be some way you could try and get an archive set up on the forums where we could view all the past Scene of the day threads?

This was always my impression, too. I only first played Runaway about a month and a half ago, and though it isn't anywhere near as close to me as Monkey Island will be, my main lasting impression of Runaway was that it really wanted to be like Monkey Island, and the developers really wanted Brian to be a next generation version of Guybrush Threepwood.

I must disagree with Jacob, though. MI3 is beautiful as a cartoon, and I really loved the fact that when playing it I actually felt like I was playing a real cartoon, but I still find the graphics in The Secret of Monkey Island to be so much more attractive. There's something special about that style to me. :)

Ron Gilbert wasn't part of MI3, IIRC.
But yeah.

I remember disliking the CMI graphics at first, as I'd actually quite liked the semi-serious artistic style of the previous two titles. It grew on me, though, and it still looks good today :).

That scene is made by the bouyancy aid.

MI3 really established the classic graphic style of the MI universe. MI 1 & 2 looked great, but MI3 really defines the style.

MI3 is the best in the series to me, MI2 was great, but MI3 is better. :) IMO.

*pop*

CMI doesnt define anythign of the MI series, I kinda hated the style, not cause it was bad...it was great, but because it was so stylish that now when there seems to be a fan anything of MI they try to copy the style.

And guybrush with a beard looks awful in the CMI style :( looks like it was taped on.

And....its not MI2 :frown:

Since this style was only used in CMI, I'm not sure exactly how it could have established anything...

It crated the style used in MI4. And if LA makes another MI is will probably be in the same style.

Well I would definately say that MI:1 and MI:2 were the ones that established the style of what we loved Monkey to look like. But in reality, both those games were no different in graphics or style than say, Kings Quest 5 and 6. MI:3 may have defined how games were going to start to look, and how the next 10 years of Adventure Game companies would try to pursue though. (and it's true. MI:3 was 1997. We are now in 2006, and Runaway and Runaway 2 are still using the same exact style and graphics) But when I think MI, I think of Lechuck chasing me around in the basement of his castle in MI:2.

But as technology gets better, graphics get better. I love MI:3 the same as the previous 2.

You can just do a search (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/search.php?searchid=351532) for threads with "Adventure Game Scene of the Day" in the title.

I'll add a link to the sticky a the top of the forum.

Ack. Apparently the search doesn't last forever. When I click the link now it says "no search results". :frown:

MI4 is using MI3's style? How?
Not only does MI4 look completely different because of 3D, but also the character design has nothing to do with the one in CMI. Guybrush, for example, is shorter, rounder, he... well, he's just not the same guy.
Frankly, apart from the clouds, which probably looked the same in both games, I have trouble finding similarities.

I think he meant the cartoonish style of MI3 was emulated in MI4, except it didn't come out the way they intended. Ofcourse it's next to impossible to create a 3D character looking like a "hand drawn" one.

Weren't the characters in Runaway 3D? Well, they looked like normal handdrawn ones to me, but according to the box:

# 3D characters with a cartoon look and high-impact visual features that include 2D and 3D in an unmatchable style.

Toefur, Runaway was one of the first games to implement cell shading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_shading). I love it when it's done right (as in Runaway), and if it suits the game.

All the characters in runaway were 3d models yes. You can even render out full films using 3d studio max with the cartoon shaders on. I did a Superman animation for a company advertisement that required the exact thing you see in Runaway.
