Hey everyone, I just finished playing Loom. I thought it was a lot of fun and, while short, I loved the world and the concept of the guilds.
I have a question, though -- what is this FM Towns version all the kids are talking about these days? I gather it's a superior version of Loom VGA -- am I correct?
FM-Towns is/was a Japanese console, with PC-style architecture. The FM-Towns version of Loom is pretty much identical to the VGA version, if memory serves (I have it, but never bothered playing it for long, hate Loom). There may be some slight music and graphical tweaks, but there are no substantial changes AFAIK.
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is the only LucasArts game on the FM-Towns that's significantly different, I believe. That version is well worth playing, if for the 256-colour graphics alone.

It's actually a tad more complicated than that. See this thread (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showthread.php?t=10551).

You're wrong, AGA. Loom FM-Towns is basically a VGA version of the 16-color version of Loom.
That means all the original dialogue is intact and all the close-up shots of characters are included. Also, the old MIDI music is replaced by synthesized CD music tracks (like in Monkey Island 1 CD).
In Loom PC CD, voice acting was added, but dialogue was changed and shortened considerably compared to the original EGA version. Plus, most of the nice close-up shots were removed, as was much of the Tchaikovsky music.
EDIT: Kurufinwe beat me to it, I see.

I´d love to play the FM-Towns version of Zak McKracken, the manga-esque graphics look adorable.:)
It´d be wonderful if someone could port over the game to pc or emulate it somehow.:)

You'd have to play the Japanese FM Towns version if you wanted manga-style graphics. The character faces in the English version look pretty much just like they did in the PC EGA enhanced version.
It is emulatable, via SCUMMVM. You just need to find the game itself first, which isn't too easy to do.

Hmm I thought they always had a CD version. I remember my dad used to buy all the cd versions of adventure games when I was younger. The cd version had the voices, better graphics and of course the closeups but I never played the disk version of loom.

The CD version had close ups for some characters (Mainly the weavers, because you couldn't see their lips. Also, Chaos had a closeup). But the disc version had close ups for every character. The FM Towns version had them for every character as well, but of higher quality.
