Hi all

I've done a search for this particular problem but nothing seems to come up.

I've been replaying The Longest Journey and I've encountered a problem when I try to load a saved game. I am currently at Hope Street on Disc 2.

I put in Disc 1 to start the game and then click my saved game, which then asks me for Disc 2 in a TLJ window. So far, so good. However, when I click "Okay", a Windows window appears and says there is an error and asks me for Disc 1 (apologies, I'm doing this from work so I don't have the exact wording - something like "volume error, insert TLJ_En_1"), and then the whole game crashes out on me.

I'm running on XP in 98/ME compatibility mode. It worked fine previously, but I have recently updated my version of XP and have the up-to-date Service Packs.

If I can't solve this disc swapping problem, is there an easy way to run the game from my hard drive? I've got plenty of space, so no problem there.

Any advice would be gratefully received, as I'd forgotten how much I'd enjoyed playing TLJ (which was a recommendation from this forum). :frusty:

Hi.

Why don't you just leave the second disc in drive when starting & loading a saved game? I don't recall ever needing to insert the first CD just to start the game.
If it still won't work, copy the content of all CDs and install from hard drive. Such installation works without any problems, worked for me at least(with 4 CD version)

I haven't started the game with the second disc in because I can't get the launcher to work - I can click it, but it does not respond. So I've been going into the first disc and starting it directly. If I don't put the first disc in, I can't find anywhere to start the game (forgive me if I'm being stupid on that point).

And can you literally just copy over the files? I started doing that last night, but stopped as some files on Disc 2 were duplicates of Disc 1 and I'd have to overwrite them. I'd assumed that they were different sections but at the same location and therefore parts of the game wouldn't play if I continued doing that.

Why do you start your game from a CD? The executable file is installed on the hard drive. I suspect you're doing something wrong here.

Once you install the game, the launcher might indeed fail to start, it is a well known issue, just check the game's directory for another executable file. I'm affraid I don't remember the file's name, but I believe it was 'game.exe' or something.
Make a shortcut on desktop pointing to this file and start a game.

As far as the installation from the hard drive goes:
1. Uninstall current game
2. Copy the content of CD1 onto hard drive in a folder of your choice, i.e. CD1
3. Copy the content of CD2 into folder CD2
4. Run the installation from CD1 folder
5. Once the installer ask for CD2, browse to the location of folder CD2 on your hard drive and continue installation
6. Once installation completes, find the game executable in the folder where you installed the game.
7. Run the game
8. Enjoy.

This happened to my version of the game too. Here is what I did/ still do. Load up a game on disc one THEN load up your disc 2 game.

Don't ask me how this logically works but it sorted the problem for me.

Copy all the files from all CDs into a directory, "C:\Program Files\Funcom\The Longest Journey\". If you're using another drive letter then ust replace "C:" with whatever you use.
In the directory there should be a file called preferences.ini, in it there is a line "bool_SkipCD=0", make sure it reads, "bool_SkipCD=1".
Download this registry file (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/aj.rae/tlj.reg), right click and select Merge. If using a different drive letter right click, select Edit, and change the drive letters.
In the directory you copied TLJ to you will find "game.exe", right click, select Create Shortcut, then copy the shortcut wherever you want it.

If you have the 2CD version:

Download the patch (http://forums.longestjourney.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1723).
Don't use compatibility mode.

This doesn't work with the North American 4CD version. At least it doesn't work with mine. I get these two files that won't copy over from the first disc. I'm guessing one of the files is the first dreamimg sequence (video after the chapter 1 video) because that is where my game crashes.

If you can't copy those files from your CD, then obviously your CD has a problem. You should try cleaning it. :)

I took your advice and copied all the files in 1 folder, afterwards I merged the files but when I changed bool_skip cd=1 nothing happened. When I changed it back, the game started!
But now I have no audio!!! could you offer your help once more? thanks!

is it due to the 2 cd / dvd-rom drives problem?
I remember I had this kinda problem with several older games, in which I had to rename my drive name ......
