View Full Version : Playing Discworld under Dosbox
Terramax

Yo! Got Discworld and have it sort of running under Dosbox, however a few probs.
1.) When I play the game in full screen mode it tells me that it's an 'unknown mode'.
2.) I managed to get the sound working by running the 'sblaster' file before the game but there's nomusic.
3.) whenever i save game it never actually saves. I click on load and there's nothing there.
Surely somebody else has got this game working? Any help would be greatful, thanks ^^

1) What's saying that? DOSBox or the game?
2) How have you set up the . . .
Oh, enough is enough! Why am I wasting my time writing all that? I've done (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showpost.php?p=209817) it already far too many times. :P

My monitor tells me that. Is there anyway to configure the size manualy? Stretch the screen like you can do on, say, Media player?

Is there anyway to configure the size manualy?
Yes, there is. Read the manual. Read the comments in the config file. Read the DOSBox wiki (esp. the page about the aforementioned config file).

TerraMax, when you say dosbox, you mean what exactly?
People have a tendency to call DOS mode a dosbox, while many of us think of DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net), an emulator.
So lets go one step at the time... Where are you running Discworld from?

People are still using a dos mode?
I had no trouble setting DOSBOX for Discworld, myself, with the music and stuff... So it's doable. :)

Some people are keeping old machines around for sole purpose of runing the old DOS games. :)
As for the Discworld in Dosbox, yes, got it to work without any problems, minus the speed issues.
Same goes for Discworld2... game itself plays fine, while cutscenes are a bit too heavy for my rig to handle.

I have got Discworld 1 + 2 running perfectly on windows ME without the use of DosBox.
Anyway we wont have to worry about this soon when it becomes available on ScummVm.

Well 'soon' can be very relative term... I wouldn't expect full support for them for another 6 months, maybe even more than that, if I were you.

I'm using DOSbox. No music though. Games won't save. I'll try doing the screen size manually though.:7

Terramax, you haven't answered VoodooFX's question. So, once again, please read my post here (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showpost.php?p=209817). And take it seriously. Everybody here is willing, even eager, to help, but nobody's going to be able to, unless you provide the required information.
If for some reason you don't want to do that, then read the documentation I mentioned earlier. I had no problem running Discworld under DOSBox, and seemingly neither did VoodooFX nor Ninth. So you should be able to figure it out by yourself, if that's what you prefer. But know that there are people willing to give help here, if you ask for it properly (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showpost.php?p=209817). :)

He did answer my question. He said he is using Dosbox.
I'm using DOSbox. No music though.
But one of the problems he mentioned (can't save a game) reminds me of the time, when my friend had the same problem... and he was playing cd-ripped version. Which would also explain why Terramax can't hear any music.
So if that's the case with you Terramax, I think you'll have to either buy a full game or play the game through ...in one sitting.
It that's not the case... follow the Kurufinwe's guide and give us the information we need in order to help you further.

No, he didn't:

Anyway,
But one of the problems he mentioned (can't save a game) reminds me of the time, when my friend had the same problem... and he was playing cd-ripped version. Which would also explain why Terramax can't hear any music.
He has voices (it's not clear here, but he said it more explicitly on the DOSBox forums. I doubt any CD-rip would include some hundred megs of voices but leave out the MIDI music. So he must be doing something wrong.
And the inability to save probably means that the game is badly configured and tries to save in a directory that is write-protected or even doesn't exist. So he must be doing something wrong here again.
I'm sure we could actually figure out what the problem is and find a solution with some guesswork from what we've got here. But I'm completely unwilling to waste time doing that, and will wait for further information. :P
Though I bet it's just an improper installation, or possibly even no installation at all.

Answer found to the second problem. I couldn't find a way of installing the game (apparently the installation program is on the floppy disc and I don't have a floppy drive) so I dragged the info from the CD into my old games folder. Do you think there's a way of creating a saved game file somewhere?

Never heard of such release being in existance.

No installation, I knew it! :)
Anyway, copy the entire contents of the CD somewhere on your hard drive. Right-click on that folder (under Windows), Properties, uncheck "read-only", OK, say you want it applied to all subfolders, files, etc.
Then, under DOSBox, run setsound, choose Gravis Ultrasound for Audio (IO 240, IRQ 5, DMA 3 are the DOSBox defaults; or enter the appropriate settings if you've changed them yourself), and General MIDI for music. Then save the settings and run disc (or the game exe, dwb I think).
And that should be it. See how easier it is when you actually try and provide some information...?

I wasn't being hard on him. Not in that last post anyway. ;)
I understand, and accept, that some people may know little about computers. I also understand, and accept, that some people are not interested in learning about computers, although I believe that it is necessary to learn a few things to use DOSBox, as DOS was an awfully complex and user-unfriendly thing. But that's not the point. The point is that it is important to ask for help in a proper fashion, if you want to achieve something. Actually, thinking what information may be relevant and looking at it is usually enough to make you solve the problem by yourself. And so I believe it's important, far beyond the field of computers, and so, yes, I am rubbing it in. But maybe that way it'll be remembered, and maybe Terramax will afterwards have a better approach to his problems and be able to find the solution himself, or at least ask for it in a way that'll make him receive the answer in a few minutes instead of several days. You know, it's like that thing about giving fish to a person and feeding him for one day, or teaching that person to fish and feeding him for life...
(Yes, that was the pedagogy manifesto of the day. See, I'm still young and innocent and actually still believe in all that! :D)

Setsound doesn't seem to exist on DW. Tells me illegal command if I type setsound.
I tried loading a sound file called PMIDPAK and it said this.
MIDI Sound Package - Copyright (c) 1993, John W. Ratcliff :v3.0
Miles Desigh Inc. MIDI music driver 'MIDPAK.ADV' not found.
Run SETM to define sound hardware.
I typed 'SETM' and 'SETMUSIC' but nothing happened but the illegal command.
P.S. Sorry I didn't give all info last time.

This is all very odd. My version has the setsound programme, but not all those other things that you mention. No matter, we'll work it out. :)
In DOSBox, go to the folder where you've put all the contents of the CD. Then, type :
dir > blah.txt
This is going to create a text file called blah.txt (in the folder) listing all the contents of this folder. Please attach this file here.

Where is this folder? You've got C:\DW\, under which there is C:\DW\DISCWLD\. Is the DRIVERS folder under that? Anyway, can you do the dir thing again in C:\DW\DISCWLD\? And in DRIVERS too, while you're at it?
(though, before that, you may try launching setsound from C:\DW\DISCWLD; maybe it's just sitting there).
If you have the time to wait, the people at SCUMMVM are working on interpreting the engine. So in a while you'll be able to use scummvm to play it.

Silly, silly, silly me...
Well, actually, no: silly, silly, silly Discworld developpers. :pan:
They didn't include proper sound devices management in the original version: what you need is version 1.04, with the use of this patch (http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/patdl.cgi?lang=eng&sys=pc&file=disc_up.zip).
Here's what you'll do. Move the contents of all your \DW\DISCWLD\ directly into your \DW folder, that'll make things easier. You can also delete the whole DRIVERS subfolder. Then uncompress the patch in your \DW\ folder (which is where now all the game files are) and run disc104.exe (don't worry about the update.bat thing).
Then you'll be able to run setsound and all that, as I explained earlier (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showpost.php?p=213412).
Hopefully, that should be it... finally. :)

I can't seem to find a link to download the patch. And I can't find the patch on any other sites. It says something about them rebuilding the site. Does this mean that they've stopped patch downloads temporarily?

Just follow the link (http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/patdl.cgi?lang=eng&sys=pc&file=disc_up.zip) I gave and click on one of the mirrors. I've just tried it again, and it works.

Nope, the mirrors all take me to http://dlh.net/

I really don't know what to tell you... Try again, maybe it was just an intermittent problem with their server? It is still working fine for me (with the 2nd and 3rd mirror).
(don't use any sort of dowload manager; I think their server doesn't accept that ; just download it with your browser)
If it still doesn't work, send me your email address by PM and I'll send the file to you.

Okay I managed to get the file somewhere else. I then dumped the dw104 file into the subfolder, opened it with setsound and let it do its magic.
And is it me or is the music in the pc version different to the psx version?
Oh and, excuse me if you've already explained how but how do I fix the save problem (it won't remember my save games)?
Oh, and, I'm really thankful for so far ^^

I wouldn't know: I've never played the PSX version. What do you mean by different, anyway? Different tunes or different orchestrations? If it's the latter, it's normal: the PC version uses General MIDI for music (at least, if you've configured it as I've advised you to), which is something that the PSX doesn't have, and the exact sound of which depends heavily on the sound card you use.
Oh and, excuse me if you've already explained how but how do I fix the save problem (it won't remember my save games)?
me
I thought making the folder writeable would be enough to get the saves to work, but obviously it's not that... I should have checked, which I now have. OK, in DOSBox, go to your \DW\ folder (which is where now all your game files should be, right? Go to \DW\DISCWLD\ instead if you didn't move them), and type:
md save
And then launch the game normally and you should now be able to save. :)
Terramax
11-20-2005, 07:57 AM
Nope. Dosbox accepts md save and creates a save folder but when I save it doesn't appear in the load screen or in the save folder.

Does DOSBox say anything (in the DOSBox console) when you try to save, such as Warning: file creation failed: c:\DW\SAVE\SG.1 (which is what I get if the SAVE subfolder doesn't exist)?

Warning: file creation failed: C: \oldgames\DISCWLD.CD\SAVE\SG.1

I know there's a better way to do that (and store the savegames where the game wants you to), but it's high time the damn thing started working, so let's forget about proper ways. :)
So, we'll just create the save folder wherever the game wants it to be. So, in DOSBox, where you're under C:\ (not C:\DW\):
md DISCWLD.CD
cd DISCWLD.CD
md SAVE
And the launch the game normally.
It shouldn't have been so hard to get this game to work normally, but, well, I dunno, I have very fuzzy memories of how I first got it to work, and the fact that it doesn't have any kind of proper installer certainly doesn't help.
I'm not going to say 'and that should be it', as I've already said it prematurely far too many times; I'll just keep my fingers crossed. :)

YES! It worked (has a heart attack).
Okay, so I've done that and the last thing, how do I change the frame size of dosbox automatically (my pc monitor doesn't support this game full size, even though DW2 works fine in full screen)?
I tried looking on the read me file and on the dosbox forum but nothing on this topic.
Hopefully this should be the last question.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the DOSBox graphic modes; I found something that worked for me, but this all depends on both your video card (ATIs and nVidias behave slightly differently) and your monitor.
My advice is that you just experiment for yourself with the various options. Open your dosbox.conf, and try playing with the options in the [sdl] and [render] sections. There are explanations inside the file, and more detailed ones here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=dosbox.conf%2Fsdl) and here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=dosbox.conf%2Frender). I especially advise you to try fiddling with output, fullfixed & fullresolution (those two work together, and I think they're what you need), possibly hwscale, as well as the scalers. I know this is very vague but, as I said, this really depends on your hardware. :frown:
And good to hear that it is finally starting to work. :)

What did you do? (this might help people who have a similar problem and find this thread with a search)
And yes, it's a great game, with some extremely difficult puzzles. I'll have to replay it someday, but it's still too fresh for me now. :)

Alright, Im having a problem with DOSBox as well. I got sound, and I can save. Except I got no voices..
I downloaded discworld from abandonia.com. (I tried the forum there but something is wrong with the site currently.)
I got version 0.72 of DOSBox.
DOSBox is installed as C: \DOS (damn smileys, added a space to remove it)
And discworld as C: \DOS\CDrive\DISCWLD\
I installed the exe that was linked in this topic and did as it said in post #16/#26 now it says it cant find the CD..which I didnt have to begin with. :)
The game is INSTALLED.
I dont know what other info you might need..
I gave all the info that I could remember. If you need to know anything else Ill try to find that out as well.

Right, done everything in this thread, and it still wont save. DOSbox config is as default except for mounting a c: drive (c:\dosboxc on the real drive), and using IMGMOUNT to give me a d: drive that i can change between Discworld, and the two red alert CDs. I have sound, but the game won't save. The SAVE folder is in the DISCWLD directory, and i get no errors (or messages of any kind) in the status window when i try to save. I am running version 1.04, and did a proper install from the image.
I am running the game as follows:
c:
cd discwld
disc
saving for other games (i.e. red alert) works fine.

Oy, it's only been... what?... four years since this thread was started, and almost a year since its last post. Oh, well, I just found it. I'm guessing someone out there in the future might stumble across it with a Google search just like I did...
This little problem has plagued me for 3 days now and I finally got it working. I did everything listed (installed, copied all files to the main directory, did the disc104.exe update and everything) and the one thing that kept aggravating me was that the stupid game wouldn't Save!!! :\
The only method that worked for me was to install the game into a directory named DISCWLD.CD (with all the game files in it), and then I had to create another DISCWLD.CD directory under that one, and then stick a SAVE directory under that. So my saves go into C: \DISCWLD.CD\DISCWLD.CD\SAVE. Tried many other combinations, and that was the only one that worked.

... or you could just run it using ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org) on any system you can ever imagine, using the lastest SVN binary (I'm playing Discworld on my mobile phone :P). This wasn't an option back in the days of the earlier posts, and it runs on Scummvm better than on DosBox, in my opinion (and many others share this opinion) :D
