According to Ragnar's blog:

It's now official, by the way: The game will not be called "The Longest Journey .static", nor will it be called "The Longest Journey 2" or "II" or any variation thereof. Instead, it'll have a brand new name (which we won't reveal for some time yet). Why? Because: a) it's not a sequel; b) it's the next chapter in the saga, blah-blah-blah; and c) we wanted the best title possible, and "static" just didn't cut it. So there.

Good to know. :) I thought it was established originally that .Static was only a working title anyway. :)

See?! This man knows how to name a sequel!

I'm already intrigued. Let's hope he brushes up on story and dialogue this time.

It's kind of sad it won't bear The Longest Journey name, but hopefully, they'll still be true to the original.

Its not the sequel. So it doesn't have to be true to original :)

But I still hope it will stay true to the original. ;)
I can't even imagine all the controversy if they decide to go 3D/RPG/Action/Adventure or something along those lines.
Not that I think they will. They made an excellent adventure game, and I believe they are able to make another one.

That's not bad, it's good. People who just use the previous title with the new game is unimaginative, which leads one to think that the game itself is unimaginative too. And I really hope that the next chapter in that saga is not going to be unimaginative.

Sad? The title shouldn't have that much bearing on the game, now should it? And who knows? Maybe their publishers will force them to stick Longest Journey 2 in as a subtitle. :)

MI2? MI3? MI4? BF2? BF3? StS2? StS3? (ah, forget that one) Baldur's Gate 2? Discworld 2? GK2? GK3? GTA3? Icewind Dale 2? IJ4? Sierra Games?

In case you point on that "think" word: Think for yourself ;-)

I don't think some of those titles that you put numbers in the name were actually named that way. You know, third and fourth Monkey Islands, and maybe the Gabriel Knight series...

It's good to name your sequel something different. Many reasons! It indicates that you are coming up with some a bit more "imaginative" as ragnar said, which means it will probably be a bit less Hollywood than anything else in the present, and Hollywood is bad. It can attract people who had no idea what the first one is about. It can dupe people who hated the preceding one into giving up their money for this new one.

Now that you mention it... this stupid naming process probably has a lot to do with the downfall of the "great" Sierra series. I like many of these series, but I can see how intimidating it can get to play any of them when there is a FAT SIX slapped next to the title. That means someone needs to buy five more games to understand this one to the fullest. Who wants to do that? Especially when Sierra adventure games were so short and simple. They really could have grouped two games in one.

And Oddworld does a great job of the sequel frenzy. Never putting roman numerals anywhere in their titles, they also include movies in ever next game that show what happened in the preceding games very short and sweet. It sort of shows that they really truly care that you are playing.

Sequels need to show that they truly care if you are watching or playing or reading. It's ridiculous if they don't, because when they use the most obvious sequel tricks, it seems like they are laughing because they have your money now, since fans are obligated to interact with their sequel and there's nothing they can do about it.

Glad I avoided that Matrix tripe. Also, any punctuation marks and spelling errors and lack of clarity above is done on purpose for comedic effect.

For those that you actually are correct that they are named that way, yes, it is unimaginative.

How about renaming the James Bond books/movies to James Bond 7, James bond 13, etc. instead of Goldfinger, Moonraker and Diamonds are forever. Or having the Sherlock Holmes stories called Sherlock Holmes short story 37. It is just unimaginative and boring. Everyone will be able to figure out that they are part of a series anyway.

No book are called something 2 or something 3 or whatever. And about James Bond movies- they just wasn't made in hollywood, thats all. :)
